Optional for a Reason

The image associated with my purchase shows a machined mount, which is what I wanted. I specifically avoided other offers showing the newer, forged mount, because my intention was to permanently-mount the base to a piece of soapstone. What I received was Lansky's newer, forged mount. For what I paid, it's not worth the trouble (or resources) to return it. With a little tooling, I can make it work for me. This review is for the forged mount, rather than the poor advertising of the seller.

The forged mount works. It's not perfect, but on the basis of the overall system design, it doesn't appear that it was meant to be. Lansky did a great job to bridge the gap between high and low-quality knife sharpening systems. Lansky's system performs as advertised, and you will enjoy the beauty and functionality of a highly-sharpened blade.

The mount is simply an option, which still requires you to use both hands. It serves as a centralized pivot point for what you would normally be doing 'free hand', and some might argue that it allows more control of your sharpening stroke. The stand is not necessary for obtaining a highly-polished edge.

In my case, the universal mount will serve as a stand to hold the blade clamp. I am fabricating an adjustable handle clamp to immobilize the knife and alleviate the balance issue of the universal mount. For what I will ultimately be using the mount for, I would have been better off not to have purchased it.

Once you do get the mount to fit.. It's just wobbly and basically useless.. By the way if you order the diamond system, it comes with a bottle of honing oil (which their website says "never use honing oil on diamond stones) I contacted lansky and they told me never use it on diamond stones... So why did it come with it and why do the directions give details on using it on diamond stones.....? I don't know either... So.. Buyer beware.. The sharpener works well.. If you don't use the oil provided with it... But the stand is basically useless... When I received it it did not fit.. A slight amount of wet sanding made it fit but.... Don't waist your money.. The stand only takes up more of your time with no extra benefit.. Would be great if it actually worked.. Or if it even fit the system but it does not..

In my review of the Lansky Pro Sharpening Kit I had commented on and recommended that one purchase the Lansky Universal Mount and attach it to a small board as shown in many of the YouTube demonstration videos. It allows you to focus on sharpening rather than struggle to hold the balde holding clamp at the same time as sharpening. My single complaint is that the blade holding clamp fits quite loosely of this mount, allowing it to jiggle a bit. Perhaps some electrical tape wrapped tightly around the top of the post would be helpful...I'll have to try that next time.

Wobbles like crazy.

As mentioned quite a few times before mine was very wobbly and unstable. It really is not meant to just be placed on a table either because it is very lightweight and slides around a lot. I am sure securing the base to a table top with screws would make a big difference since that is really what it is meant to do, but it wouldn't change the fact that the peg that the clamp sits on just seems too small and allowed way too much wiggle room. You would be far better off going to Home Depot and getting a table clamp that secures tightly to the edge of a table or bench and then put the Lansky clamp in there. That is what I ended up doing and it made it far more stable. This mount just felt way too wobbly and makes it difficult to feel like you have any more control than just holding the clamp in your bare hand. I would pass on this and go with a table clamp. Just don't get the C-clamp made by Lansky because it uses the same peg and you will have the exact same problem. With the table clamp I was able to get amuch more precise edge than using this mount and I highly recommend that instead.

Not bad...

I have the Lansky sharpening set and always wanted this stand. Finally got one. mounted it on a 2x2 square of 3/4 ply so its a little sharpening bench. One fault with this guy is the stand stud on the top. It may be a smidge too tight so test it with the Lansky blade clamp. If its tight, get a piece of medium grit paper and sand the stud a smidge. Fixes it right up. You may not have the issue but be aware that it might and that its easily corrected.

When sharpening a four inch blade heavy pocketknife I found this unnessary and actually more cumboru e to use than simple holding the Lansky jig in my hand. I did appreciate the fact that this easily collapses to fit in the Lansky sharpening kit plastic box. The problem is that this thing is just not heavy enough to keep everything from moving so you need to hold it with one hand. If you are already holding it why not just hold the entire thing. It seemed to be easier without this. So it is well made and does what it says but it is unnecessary.

This is a must if you order the Lansky Sharpening System. It's rather crude and the clamp fits on really loose, but it works okay. Mount it on a 1x6 board or similar and you're all set.

Not a big fan. The peg is machined quite a bit smaller than the hole on the mount that holds your blade. As a consequence, there is a lot of play when sharpening. A LOT. I suppose this could be rigged to work more efficiently but I think this is just not manufactured at a sufficient quality level. I do not recommend this.
