This charger doesn't have the rubber that wraps around to keep the cord in place like the Dell brand, but it does have a velcro strip to contains the cord. The plastic casing when compared to the Dell brand adapter was exact in every way except it doesn't have D-E-L-L on it. It works great. I would suggest not to let the adapter put too much strain on the cord, but let the adapter rest on the floor or table. We had this trouble even with the Dell brand. If it falls off the table (and it eventually will especially with kids around), it probably will separate from the cord because the casing is heavy. We've been through 2 Dell adapters, the second one being repaired twice, and now this one. Eventually, we'll get a new laptop (we have the business class) and maybe the adapter won't be so heavy and have a better cord.

I purchased this charger for a Dell D830 laptop. IT IS NOT AN AUTHENTIC DELL CHARGER. It is a different brand charger that tries to be compatible, but isn't always. It worked fine for the first few months, and then it got really flaky:

* Upon starting up my computer, the BIOS warns me that the system AC adapter type cannot be determined, and that consequently the battery may not charge and system performance will be reduced. Upon doing some research, I found that AC Adapters for many Dell computers actually send information to the computer (what adapter type, wattage, etc.) via a small pin in the middle of the adapter - it's not just a power supply, it also sends a small amount of data when plugged in. I believe that this is what is malfunctioning in the charger. My BIOS complains that it cannot recognize the AC adapter type, and as a result my system performance will be reduced. If I continue, I DO INDEED notice a drastic decrease in speed (especially for doing computational stuff).

* The laptop does not always charged when plugged in. The green "charging battery" light on my laptop does not turn on (even if I know the battery is very low). This happens because the system does not recognize the AC adapter.

For this reasons, I would highly recommend buying the official Dell charger (even though it may cost more). It will be worth it if the charger lasts longer.

There are a lot of these models of charger for sale and I looked at the reviews of a whole bunch of them. Overall it seemed that most got a 4 star rating and if you looked at the details of the ratings it was common for there to be 20 "bad" ratings for every 60 "good" ratings. One common thread for the bad ratings was that the charger got really hot, sometimes to the point of melting some portion of it. There didn't seem to be much variation in the ratings with price until you paid over $30+ dollars and even those had some portion of bad reviews for one reason or another. So this one had the typical 4 star rating and a low price so I picked it. My observations after a couple of days.... The plug fits nice and snugly into the computer. The cords are quite a bit shorter than is typical of OEM power packs that come with new computers. Longer would have been nicer. It came with a two prong plug which was what was shown in the ad. There has not been a problem with my Dell D820 recognizing this power pack, which was something people sometimes complained about with these inexpensive power packs. It also will both charge the battery AND run the computer at the same time.

So, what about "how hot does it get"? If all it's doing is running the computer cuz the battery is already fully charged it just gets warm, 105 degrees. If the computer is off but the battery is charging it gets pretty warm, nearly hot, I measured it to be around 115 degrees case temperature. If it's both charging the battery and running the computer at the same time it gets hot, around 125 degrees in the hottest spots of the case. It will charge the battery pretty fast, I didn't time it but it seemed like it only took a few hours.

This charger has worked really well for me, to the point where I am on my second one of them. They are cheap and are a great replacement for the original dell charger. They do give out after probably a year or two but since they are so cheap, just buy another one.

This is my third of this type of power supply to buy over the last year because I have been refurbishing Dell laptops for family members, none have let me down yet. I really like them and they are dirt cheap! They arrive very fast too!

Purchased this charger to replace my Dell charger that died - I needed something I could get quickly because my laptop was dead and wouldn't turn back on. This charger worked fantastically for 3 days, at which point it died. It suited my purposes for a super-temporary replacement until I could get a new Dell charger, but if you're looking for something to last you more than a few days, this isn't it. Take my advice and invest in a charger that'll actually last.

It works, but I do have the following minor issues:
1. A few times, I've gotten a BIOS error on boot saying something about an error regarding power. I hit continue and everything is fine.
2. The plug doesn't fit as snug into the computer as it should. It's fallen out a few times when moving the laptop around.

Overall these issues don't bother me much, and definitely worth the money saved.
