Really good with my netbook

This little speaker is great for my Asus Netbook. The Netbook actually has decent speakers for its size, but the sound is much better in every way with this device attached. It's very convenient to use as it just plugs into a USB port. No extra power cords or outlets needed. As others have said, there is no volume control so you have to use controls on the computer. My only minor complaint is that I used it with 2 computers so far (netbook and laptop) and each time I had to reboot the computer to get it to work the first time I tried it. After that it works fine so maybe the computer has to learn something about it before it functions. At first I thought it was defective so I called JLab (good customer service) and the rep told me to try rebooting the computer and that did the trick. I'm happy with this purchase.

Newer comments on 3/2/2012: I had to return this speaker to JLab as it stopped working after a few weeks. The free replacement, which was sent very promptly by JLab, came with instructions that I don't recall seeing when I got the first one directly from Amazon. (I buy many things from Amazon and I believe I would have saved directions if they were included.) The instructions that I now have tell you to NOT plug in the speaker until you have fully booted the computer and turned off any other sound producing programs. It also tells you to NOT rotate the speaker more than 340 degrees around the flexible cable; don't force it beyond where it naturally wants to stop turning. (During my first call to JLab, a customer service rep told me you can rotate it as much as you like; NOT TRUE!) So it's possible that I did something to the first one that caused it to stop working based on this incorrect info. JLab sent me a new one, it's working great and I will follow all instructions to the letter - now that I know what they are.

Very good speaker - just what I needed

I bought this speaker so that my mom could watch movies and listen to CDs on her HP laptop. The laptop speakers aren't powerful enough to produce sound loud enough to hear.

These are nearly perfect. The sound is quite loud, and now mom can hear everything, even above the drone of the air conditioner!

It may not be home-theater quality, but that is not what we needed. It is perfectly fine sound quality for what we want.

There is a slight hiss at the highest volume.

It was VERY easy to install - just plug it in and go. The HP's volume control buttons control the volume.
I did, however, have to re-configure the microphone in order for Skype to work again properly. Inexplicably, after plugging in the speaker, Skype changed the default microphone. It was easy for me to change it back, but my mom would have been lost.

Another cool feature - this is hte only USB speaker I found that let's you close the laptop cover with speakers still plugged in. VERY convenient!

Support: I called and emailed the company on the 4th of July to ask a question about it - they called me back first thing next morning. A very knowledgeable and friendly person helped me out.

Only 2 cons: (and why they don't get 5 stars yet)
1. No mute or volume button on the speaker itself. It would be much better to be able to quickly mute by pressing a button on the speaker itself, then to have to go fumbling for the 2-button key gymnastics that some laptops use.
Now, the speakers are so nice and tiny, but still, this would be a perfect unit if it had volume controls.
2. Clamshell packaging. I despise this kind of packaging. It is bad for the environment, and frustrates customers. There are no advantages that make up for this!

Overall- would definitely buy again.

OK for $10.

I purchased this in red for $10 for use with a work PC with no external speakers. I didn’t want to deal with an AC power cord or anything rechargeable as I only wanted it for the occasional sound file, etc. I wasn’t expecting much as common sense dictates you can’t pack much low-end in such a small package. The product description did have my hopes up a bit, though.

Well, common sense was correct. No low or mid-range, and the highs are tinny. (Think 70’s AM transistor radio if you’re old enough.)

For $10, and for my purposes, it works as expected. Only a USB connection to contend with, and takes up minimal space. If you plan on listening to music or use for Skpe, etc., spend a little extra and get something with larger speakers and a separate AC source.

If I’d paid $20 for another color besides red, I would have been disappointed, but for $10, it's OK.

Great sound... just be aware of some potential power conflicts

The sound is great and it is indeed plug and play. There are some glitches that can be alarming, however, if you don't know how to work around them. I'm sure it words differently for different types of laptops, but on my laptop, Asus PC Windows 7, I have learned that in order for the device to function properly I have to wait until the computer is on, Windows is loaded and the internet has an affirmative signal before plugging in the device. And I cannot shut my laptop with the device still plugged in or all I get when I try to reopen the laptop is a blank screen - not even a blank screen - no power to the screen at all. What was really scary the first couple of times I tried using the speaker without unplugging it prior to closing my laptop, was that in addition to the blank screen (no power to the screen at all), my laptop's power button was completely unresponsive. I had to unplug the speaker, take out the laptop battery and then reboot. Everything was fine having done this, but it was a scary occurrence nonetheless. So, it is a great speaker but, based upon my experience with the device, you must wait until the computer has completely booted and then plug in the device; as well, you must unplug the speaker from the computer prior to shutting down, hibernating or putting the computer in sleep mode. It's sort of inconvenient but I can live with it as long as I know the procedures I need to follow in order to avoid the loss of power. The convenience that I get from being able to hear things well on my laptop in ways I wasn't able to prior to using this speaker sort of makes up for it.
