Editorial Reviews

The Coathangers reckless energy from their half-serious roots is every bit as vibrant and rambunctious on their 2011 album, Larceny & Old Lace. But this time around we're hearing a band that's honed their trade and incorporated more stylistic variations. With this broadened artistic horizon, refinement of technique, and Ed Rawls' production allowing every instrument to shine without detracting from the band's natural grit, The Coathangers' 2011 offering is easily their best record to date. Join the party.

I stumbled onto this album, having just seen the video to Hurricane.
The Coathangers have really grown from their performance art days, turning into an impressive punk band, bringing to mind the Slits, Sleater-Kinney and a touch of Courtney Love. They blend punk, riot grrrl and a little bit of pop into a great package. The guttural vocals from drummer Rusty Coathanger (Stephanie Luke) mix with those of Crook Kid (Julia Kugel) and bass player Minnie Coathanger (Meredith Franco) into a blend that just works.

Hurricane is clearly the top track on the album. And if you haven't seen the video, go watch it now. But other tracks like Johnny, Trailer Park Boneyard and Well Alright measure up as well. There's a ballad (ballad!) called Tabacco Rd, which I'm not sure about. But good for them for trying it.
