Let me start with filling them. Because they are soft silicone and filled with water, they are flimsy trying to hold them without spilling as you put them in your freezer.
Next, you go to use them and they're difficult to remove. You twist and turn the tray and then have to push hard on the bottom to release the cubes.
Finally, the cubes are leaving a white residue inside your glass. There is a powder leaching out of the silicone and sticking to the cubes.
No matter how hard you try to wash the trays this powder just keeps coming out! We tried the dishwasher and by hand and it just won't go away.
Other "one-star" reviewers have mentioned this powder again and again. Some have said it's calcium in your tap water BUT - our plastic trays show no signs of this powder stain in our glasses. I recommend staying away from this product.
Complete waste of money if you can never use them.
Follow up. I have no idea what this white stuff on the ice trays is. When I try to get rid of it by submerging it in hot water and rubbing until it fades, this only partially gets rid of it. When using the cubes I've been noticing granular stuff in the bottom of the glass. This is with filtered water. No cubes from these trays and then there is no stuff in the glass. I'm concerned about what this contaminate is. These pictures are taken when the trays are on the counter dry. I'd sure like to hear from the seller that this is nothing to be concerned about.
We initially loved these trays. We had something very similar from a different manufacturer, but wanted to ability to stack them. Got these, and they work like a charm. However, we started noticing an odd taste in the beverages, or even just plain old filtered water, when we used them in these drinks.
To make our ice cubes, we currently use a combination of the old trays from the other manufacturer, standard traditional-sized plastic trays that we've had for years, and these blue stackable Scotch Rock trays.
So, to get to the bottom of this odd taste issue, as an experiment, we filled all three of tray types with filtered water from the same container, and froze them overnight.
Sadly, the result is that stackable these Scotch Rocks trays are the clear-cut culprit. We duplicated the experiment, but the result was the same. The blue stackable trays produce some kind of unpleasant taste in the cubes. The other trays we used did not.
Avoid these babies!
The trays looked clean, ready for use, but I wash every new kitchen utensil before using (a good habit for everyone to have!) I set them in the dishwasher (top rack) and when I took them out, the interior (but not exterior) was coated in a powdery-looking white residue that wasn't there when I put the trays in the dishwasher. It smudged away when I rubbed at it so I soaked them for a bit in a water and vinegar solution before thoroughly washing again by hand, and air dried. Nope. Still there. I'm returning them because, really...yuck. It was difficult to photograph exactly how 'residue-ey' the compartments still are but I did my best.
