I've been using the LARK every day for about 3 months now and I think I'm experienced enough with the LARK product that I can write an appropriate review.

As a deaf person, I depend on vibrating alarms to wake me in the morning. Those that shake the bed are too startling and since I was a teenager, I have used vibrating watch alarms. The alarms are more gentle and localized. My partners sure appreciate the latter.

I have stopped using LARK completely and purchased a Timex vibrating alarm. I cannot recommend LARK, in its current form, to any user for any reason. Following are some of the issues I had with the LARK.

* One the the chief selling points of the LARK is the Sleep Coach and the Sleep Summary. I only used the 7 day assessment during the first trial period, but I don't need an expensive program to tell me that I'm not getting enough sleep and that sometimes the quality of my sleep isn't very good. The cat wakes me up sporadically through the night and I often work into late in the evening hours. No Sleep Coach is going to change that!

* Sometimes docking the LARK after waking up doesn't initiate the sleep data transfer. I have some gaps in my history because of that. What's the point of wearing the LARK if it can't even transmit data properly.

* The LARK connects to the iPhone using Bluetooth. Consequences of that link include

* An inability to change the time that the alarm is set to go off without re-docking the LARK
* An inability to turn off the alarm without re-docking the LARK (if you decide that you're going to sleep longer than expected)
* An inability to turn OFF the alarm when it is vibrating without re-docking the LARK

The last thing is a sticky issue.

I have been using the lark for about 2 weeks now and am fairly satisfied with the device's ability to monitor my sleep history. The graphs and read outs are easy to understand and the overall functioning of the Lark is user friendly. However, this device is not perfect and there are some much needed improvements. First, the sensor plugs into the base assembly via a 5pin connector. It can be tricky to line up the male and female ends of the base and sensor to plug it in. Additionally, the strap, while functional, should be made out of a more stretchy material to make it easier to put on. Rather, you have to completely unbuckle the strap and buckle it back on every time you use it. Other than these gripes, the Lark has served its purpose. The vibrating function works great and wakes me up every time. Even if the vibrations don't wake you up, the device will signal the iPhone to sound an alarm. I like that you can charge the iPhone while it is in the stand. I did have an issue with the iPhone not recognizing the Lark, however I linked them up in the bluetooth settings and it continued to link up. If you wake up in the middle of the night, or wake up and decide to use the snooze function, the sleep tracking function will stop and has to be reset by replugging the sensor back into the unit and resetting the alarm. This can be kind of annoying and time consuming, which is the last thing you want to deal with when you are tired. I would recommend the device regardless, especially for someone that could benefit from the vibrating alarm feature and would like to monitor their sleep. I guess there are apps that do this also, but I think you'd be sacrificing some of the added benefits that the Lark device offers.

This is an interesting product on the face of it, but the idea hasn't translated into a good product.

The device:
1) The vibration fails to wake me up at least half the time. the only times it does wake me is when I'm ready to wake up naturally anyway. So if you have to be somewhere on time in the morning, this is about as useful as a regular alarm clock, just 10 times more expensive.
2) Loses the bluetooth connection with the iPad all the time. I haven't managed to snooze the alarm even once. I have to dock it (which requires some fiddling) and/or turn the iPad's Bluetooth off and on, to make it reconnect and turn off the alarm and get the sleep data from the device.
3) On the positive side, it's not really uncomfortable to wear. I didn't even notice it after a day or two.

iPad App:
The iPad app is ridiculous.
1) It's the iPhone/iPod app in a bigger frame, the actual app area is the size of the iPhone with 75% of the screen being black. Doesn't scream "quality" to me.
2) You can't set a recurring alarm. You have to turn it on manually every night.
3) Minimal options for snooze time and the amount of time before the audible alarm comes on.

Website/Sleep coach:
1) Buying the device gets you a 7-day "assessment" of your sleep habits. Without ponying up extra subscription money, this feature goes away.
2) Most of the useful comparative sleep data is not available without the subscription. So buying a $100 device doesn't even get you all the functionality that make the device actually useful.
3) I get some numbers and ratings about my sleep, but no empirical explanation of what they mean.

Overall, this is a big disappointment of a product.
