There are only a couple of annoyances with this product:
Battery life with large assemblies is short, and most standard power adapters won't work with these kits. The red and yellow LEDs are overdriven when using a 4.5V power supply, and a 2A unit will drive only 60-100 LEDs. I substituted a 3.5V power supply, which allows for bigger assemblies (120-180 LEDs) and makes the LEDs last longer too. The LEDs are a little dimmer, but still plenty bright.
The manufacturing quality is the weakest part of this product. This causes connection problems due to misalignment and electrical problems due to poor solder joint quality. About 1 in 25 parts has some sort of failure, but a bad part can often be used anyway. Some of the parts are sealed (glued?) together pretty well, while others fall apart (they can be fixed with a little plastic cement, however).
Because these are being hand assembled the quality can vary significantly depending on the skill of the person that actually built the parts in your kit. My kit contained [at least] 2 bad parts (I just did a quick test, so not all of the connectors were tested), both failures are due to poor solder connections; one LED didn't light, and 1 part didn't pass power through to all the connectors.
Interestingly, the manufacturing of the parts in this kit differs from the LaserPegs "4 in 1 Power Kit" that I got yesterday. I would guess that the 3-in-1 kit is using the newer version of the part. The new parts utilize little circuit boards with SMT resistors, where the 4-in-1 kit is all discrete parts using point-to-point construction. Neither method has solved the connector and soldering quality issues, however.Read more ›
1x 90 degree peg, 2x Y shaped peg, 2x Square laser peg, 1x Wheel laser peg, 1x Cord. Please note that my testing methodology included reconnecting suspect parts to known good parts (parts which conducted to downstream components and lit properly). I used the AC power module with fewer than 10 parts connected in series to test each part.
Beyond the 7 out of 80 components that were bad out of the box, another 25% of the pieces make poor connection and have to be adjusted and readjusted to stay lit. The construction quality is poor, definitely not a toy that will last very long. Battery life is poor, requiring the device be tethered to a wall outlet to use for any length of time. If you're a parent, you know that children like to turn on lit toys and leave them on; this device is not suited for extended use (longer than 10 minutes at a time) unless you're comfortable with your child plugging toys into the wall and extending cords across the floor.
DON'T BE FOOLED BY THE NAME OF THE KITS: The parts have a very fragile feel to them, and while none have physically broken yet, it's clear that they won't last long with even moderate use. You might be able to make a dune-buggy shaped toy, but don't try rolling it; the "wheels" should have been called "balls" becuse they are NOT meant to roll.Read more ›

Simple and easy to understand instructions. It's good to see educational toys that appeal to boys who have other interests aside from sports.Published on January 14, 2013 by Judy Brill

Within 30 minutes of playing with this toy it began smoking and quit working. Toys that smoke and may catch on fire are not for ages 5+. Read morePublished on January 1, 2012 by arscroggin
We bought this for our 7 year old grandson who is into technology.
He loves it. It built and re-built for a very long time. Read more
