It's been pretty hot in Chicago these past two weeks and our central air conditioning unit is giving up the ghost. Too bad the installation of the new central air has been cancelled twice so far. So, it's been pretty warm inside. Not entirely without air conditioning, but the old unit just isn't up to the job any more.

So I picked up this little Lasko fan - and am I glad I did!

I used to have a floor model near my work table and it was always blowing papers off the table or making them flap endlessly - and even at its lowest speed, it was like sitting in a hurricane.

Not with the Lasko. Its grandiose name "PLATINUM Desktop Wind Tower" should be replaced with something like "Personal Cooler" - because that is what it does.

The unit is about six inches in diameter and just shy of 14 inches high. The plastic exterior is in the ubiquitous "platinum" so familiar to computer users. Build quality is surprisingly high. The two switches, one for power and the other to control oscillation, feel firm. My only complaint is that the power cord is on the short side: it should be at least a foot longer and preferably two feet longer, but that is a small quibble. The plug is fused, which is a plus and a minus. If the fuse in the plug blows, you have to return the unit to an authorized service center, wherever that might be, for however long it would take. The bottom of the unit apparently detaches with four screws, so a do-it-yourself repair may be feasible. Personally, at this price, if it broke, I'd be inclined to just buy a eplacement, despite the one-year warranty.

The fan has three speeds, none of which will blow you away. All are, in fact, comfortable. Right now, shirtless and with room temperature edging into the mid-70s (at Midnight!

I have three of these fans and move them around as required. They are great for smaller spaces and are easily placed on the counter tops of bathrooms, dens and kitchens. Not as effective in a large room. The top part can be adjusted relative to the bottom part, and will direct air in different directions, while stationary or oscillating. I've rated it four stars because in smaller rooms this fan can be slightly noisy on high speed. Medium and low speed are quite acceptable. Note for those concerned about color: Depending on the model number, some fans described as "Platinum" are white, and some are a nondescript grey. Check which one you are ordering or you might be surprised.

This is a good product that looks good and has a neat rotary top that I have not seen before. I would say the price may be a little high for the power you get from it but it is a perfect fit for your work desk or home workspace. It measures 14 and a half inches high and has about a 6 and a half inch diameter. So it will fit in the smallest of spaces.

Pros:
-Tilting top for constant airflow in a specific direction
-3 speeds & great oscillation
-Optimal for small spaces on even the messiest workspace

Cons:
-Only covers an area of roughly 3-4 feet, even on highest setting
-Can't be used from a long range
-very low power

I give this product three stars possibly because of the way I have it setup. It is setup to the left side of my laptop dock about 1 and a half feet away from me. It helps keep my laptop cool as well as myself. Again, if you need something powerful this is not your fan. Lastly, I ordered it with free shipping (5-8 business days) and received it in 2 business days, another testament to Amazon's great shipping!

I live in a "junior one bedroom" apartment which means that there is a 3-walled sleeping alcove, about 8 x 10 feet with my bed and a little bedroom furniture in it. The only window in my apartment is quite a distance away in the living room. So I've found, for the past 22 years, that I need some kind of fan running the bedroom to provide air circulation while sleeping. Otherwise it gets stuffy and warm in the alcove. I've run through quite a few fans in 22 years. This one is just what I need -- I have a small table and I need a smaller fan that will fit on the corner of the table. This desktop tower fan has a small enough footprint for that. Also, it's pretty quiet. I'm used to a certain amount of "white noise" from a fan -- it helps me sleep, in fact -- but a lot of fans I've tried are so noisy I can't get to sleep. I've been using this on the medium setting and in the small "bedroom" alcove, it's the right amount of air and just the right amount of white noise, fairly quiet, but enough to screen out background noises. If there's a heat wave, no doubt I'll switch it to the higher setting. I like the controls, two micro-touch buttons arranged in an almost triangular whole. The larger of the two buttons is the power/speed button. One push from "off" and it's on the high speed setting and one more push steps it down to medium, and a third push steps it down to the low fan setting. One more push turns it off again. The translucent button glows green from an underlying LED when the power is on. The smaller button turns the oscillation feature on and off -- again, when the oscillation is turned on, the button glows green. (I don't use the oscillation feature myself.Read more ›
