For the passionate, longtime fans of the band, this is Skynyrd at the top of their game, complete with instantly memorable songs, more hooks than a tackle box, and a blistering three-guitar attack at full power.

Led by core members Gary Rossington (guitar), Johnny Van Zant (vocals) and Rickey Medlocke (guitar), along with longtime drummer Michael Cartellone, Skynyrd has recorded an album that continues to build on the legacy that began over 35 years ago in Jacksonville, Florida. Joining them in the studio and on the road are new bassist Johnny Colt (Black Crowes, Train) guitarist Mark "Sparky" Matejka (a "Nashville cat, just a pickin' fool," according to Rossington), and keyboardist Peter Keys, who replaced Powell on the God & Guns tour.

Last Of A Dyin' Breed re-ignites the in-studio alchemy the band found with Guns producer Bob Marlette, and the sound is traditional Skynyrd blended to perfection with the edge of immediacy. In short, it's rock n roll for the times.

All I can really, truly say about this newest Lynyrd Synyrd album, without using an entire list of superlatives, is that it kicks ass! I purchased 'Vicious Cycle' and thought it was pretty good and that, finally, the latest version of Skynyrd, (with Johnny Van Zant as the front man), was finally developing it's own sound instead of trying to reprise the glory days of Ronny Van Zant. So I purchased 'God and Guns' and was pretty disappointed in it. Still a new sound, but the vitality of the songs was missing somehow. So, with some doubt, I purchased this album, 'Last of A Dyin' Breed.' S***! From the first couple of notes of the title song this album rocks! True southern rock sound and sentiments fans have come to love with all of the guitar this band is known for thrown in for good measure. This is the good ol' boys at their (newest!) best. The song 'Ready To Fly' brought tears to my eyes, and anyone who has had to say goodbye to a beloved parent will closely identify with it. Other songs are fun, redneck, backwoods, country living, bar room brawling fun to listen to rock 'n roll. Do NOT hesitate to buy this album because you won't regret it!

I am a Skynard fan going back to the 70's. I still have an unopened Street Survivors album. To me, I was always a little scheptical about any new releases beyond the original Skynard. Over the years I have enjoyed the "New" releases a little more as the modern band matured. The God And Guns album is a great collection of songs which are well written and relate to our currant times. The Last Of A Dying breed is one of the best written releases to date. Ready To Fly is about family, getting older, what all of us will go through in time, excellant song. Good Teacher, from learning about love, to life, to school, great song. Start Livin' life Again, About the excesses in life. All the songs are well written, well played. I know that there is only one original member left, but you have to check this out. Give a listen, than listen again and again. I believe you will pick your favorites. Out of 11 songs, 9 are excellant, two are great. With the quality of song writing, the excellant ability of these musicians, I hope the title does'nt mean it's their last.

Read a few reviews on the new album, seems to me some people just over analyse things. Thing is, over the past decade the music scene has been shocking to say the least . Have been a fan of the Southern Rock music seen since the early seventys when i first heard the Outlaws, these boys can play. Then Skynyrd quickly followed into my life, alas many years have passed, and many members passed on,( we know the history), so when ordering the new Outlaws album it was suggested i might like the new Skynyrd album as well , bloody well right I do. This album has restored my faith in music, after all the years gone, the boys and Ladys, STILL HAVE IT,!!!! from start to finish LOVE IT LOVE IT. Living in Australia , doubt I will ever get a chance to see the band live, but keep on doin what your doin and i will keep buying your music, BLOODY FANTASTIC. COLIN ,Perth, Western Australia.

I love the Skynyrd of old and new, both the brothers put their own style on how they sings the songs. The new songs that have been written are done in a way too keep up with the changes of times but they still have there own stories to tell about the world today.

It is too bad that Ronnie is still not around, because he was so talented.

If you are a true fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd, this album will not disappoint. If you are looking to hear the same music as the pre crash band, look elsewhere. As much as the pre crash band rocked and wrote amazing songs, this is not them. The current lineup has produced some OK albums in the past, this and Vicious Cycle being the best. Still unbroken was pretty good as well. One thing i cant stand are the people who compare current band to pre crash band. Get over the past and try and enjoy current bands music and style.

My fav songs so far on this album are Homegrown, Something to live for, nothing comes easy, Honey Hole and last of a dying breed

The title "Last of a dyin' breed" is the most accurate album title I've seen in years. With the first song this album gives a good swift kick and doesn't let up. Even after all the probems that have plagued this band, they still keep going and (seemingly)getting better. The "Dying breed" in question (I think) is the dwindling number of bands who can write good songs, and play REAL instruments instead of drum machines and rhythm tracks. When groups like skynyrd, aerosmith, and the stones are gone we will be stuck with a bunch of no talent fools who would be more comfortable making their music on a computer rather then bothering to learn how to play an instrument.

I thought God and Guns was good, but Last of a Dying Breed just might be the best Skynyrd release to date. There are a few songs that could have been left off (i.e. the ones about how some woman gets them turned on - kinda doesn't seem appropriate for guys of their age to be singing about), but the rest are really strong, musically and lyrically. Ready to Fly is excellent, and very touching considering how much personal loss the band has endured over the years. Johnny's vocals are superb on every song. Now, if they would just get their act together on the Confederate flag and quit cow-towing to political correctness, everything would be perfect. Long live Dixie!

When God and Guns was released, whilst I enjoyed It, it just didn't sound like LS. For Last Of a Dyin Breed the sound and band are back with a bang. If this is their last album they release (at the time of this review this is the case) then they can keep their heads held high. Granted this album isn't as good as the Pre-crash albums, I'd say it's definitely the best of the post crash albums. For the majority of other bands, this would be considered their best but as this is LS and having released some all time classics, this album was never going to compete. I originally brought this when it was released as the Classic Rock Magazine Fan Pack but as I enjoyed it so much, decided to purchase this on Vinyl as well. A solid album which has some really strong songs including the title song. I would say buy this if you love LS as I do you won't be disappointed.

Hats of to Skynyrd once again,like the previous 'God and Guns' disc this is excellent.All the usual themes are here - Defiance (Last of a Dyin Breed), Death (Ready To Fly), tales of broken America (Something To Live For/Nothing Comes Easy), Family (Good Teacher),the challenges of life (One Day At A Time/Life's Twisted). Its an album of many moods from the hope of 'Poor Mans Dream' to the world weary 'Start Livin Life Again', the good time 'Doin It Up Right'/'Homegrown' & 'Mississippi Blood' to the downright Lecherous 'Honey Hole'..it may be about a late night bar(or a fish pond - see magazine) or it may be about something entirely different,safe to say your unlikely to hear it on your local radio station.

This is a superb disc capturing every emotion,you can envisage them sitting back on the porch,throwing back a few beers while playin' 'Start Livin Life Again',you can see the lighters in the air if and when the play 'Ready To Fly' in concert,you can nod your head in agreement with the sentiment felt in 'Something To Live For',he's singing about America but we can all share in the feeling that most countries fail there people at some point.

I initially wasnt going to give 5 stars but this disc IS a 5 star disc on its own merits,it shouldnt be compared to the 70's ,if the original members were all still here,they wouldnt be able to re-create the spark of their youth,so while this doesnt have the youthful vibrancy of the early days(and how could it),this is a modern Skynyrd for a modern age while remaining true to the original blueprint.

The playing on this disc is superb,the guitar playin excellent,nuthin fancy(pun intended) but hits the spot each time,Johnny Van Zants vocals wonderful(he's had the hardest job and risen to it beautifully),they're raucous at one moment and emotive the next,a job well done.The new boys have gelled perfectly all no doubt helped by the excellent production once more of Bob Marlette..

Now if they would just take the next step and play these tunes in concert,'Ready to Fly' was made for the stage,it would be perfect played just before 'Freebird'.

The Fan pack as usual is superb,great photos ,excellent reading,the only slight negative about this release,as mentioned by a previous reviewer,it would appear that as well as the standard CD release,there is another special edition which also has 4 bonus track,however that edition has 2 exclusive studio track not found here,we get two live tracks ,which while is good value,the studio tracks would have been of more interest.

Skynyrd were the epitomy of southern rock along with the Alman Brothers. Whilst the band never quite recovered from the tragic loss of Steve Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant in 1975, the band soldiered on past the millenium - quite an achievement considering their penchant for self destruction. This is the band's last album - and Skynyrd go out with a blast with catchy riffs and melodies. Skynyrd's unbending loyalty to the South - its traditions - and the band's working class roots deserves respect.
