Most Apocalyptic tales are dark and hopeless, triggered by technologically-induced disaster, full of zombies and monsters, devoid of hope for a better future. Last Call - America is different: The Apocalypse is a deliberate government-induced disaster, in which the monsters are the government minions.

Last Call – America takes the political and technological landscape we are living in and stretches it – not really all that far – to an imagined future in which America's enemy is the government, and the people are effectively its slaves. The citizenry has had all its food and possessions appropriated, until they are utterly dependent upon the government. Those Americans who don't starve to death are to be herded into the cities for maximum control. The present is bleak, and the future only looks bleaker. The situation demands heroic measures, and a few stalwart “rebels” (one might say, the real Americans) take up the challenge: An academic turned caregiver, a soldier who hates his calling, a Native American who listens to the ghosts of his forbears, and a housewife turned Federal sex-slave who uncovers secrets that may bring down the hated government. It's a fast-moving, fast-reading tale combining a bit of history, a bit of predictive technology, and a seriously disturbing look into what might very well be our own future as Americans make political choices more in keeping with Venezuela or Cuba than America. Give yourself an evening or three to find out what sort of future you don't want for your family and your country.

Great, quick read with likeable characters trapped in compelling circumstances, this book follows a group of freedom fighters rebelling against a tyrannical government in the not too distant future. They risk their lives and make huge sacrifices, enduring sobering losses in order to win back the freedoms stolen by their leaders. Made me wonder if I would have the gumption to do the same.

A Visit By the Spirit of Christmas Future

Taylor Caldwell can rest peacefully knowing the seeds she planted fell on rich soil! The caveat that America has faced numerous periods of crisis does not lessen the urgency of understanding and heeding the clarion call for Americans to wake up before it's too late. This quote from the 5 star review by KTCocquyt sums up my sentiments nicely:

"(T)he unity of a country has been destroyed by divisive politics. Propaganda is deemed truth and the malaise of a population is the belief that their elected government is working to their benefit and equality. Everything is at stake; life, love, liberty and the fate of America and its people."

Americans are as bitterly divided today as we were in our other two major internal wars, the original revolution and the Civil War. It's clear the rift separating conservatives and liberals was always very real - ponder the cities burning in the Civil Rights & Vietnam riots and protests in 60's and of the Nixon/McGovern or Clinton/Bush eras - but the vast bulk of both groups always agreed communism was pure evil, socialism was evil on a national level in a huge, diverse population (states have always been Constitutionally free to tinker with it at will), and that if a nation doesn't have a border it ceases to be a nation. That is no longer true, and if millions more American’s don’t wake up and begin once again spreading the simple, eternal spiritual principles fleshed out in the Declaration and codified into the supreme law of the land in our Constitution, we will hasten our Romanesque decline into collapse.

Entertaining Action Thriller

I was entertained by Last Call. I must say that it made me think, as so many of the situations faced by the protagonists can be matched to things happening in our world today. The pacing gets a little uneven, which takes away from the suspense factor. The premise of Last Call is, as I mentioned, eerily prescient. I appreciated the way Debra Tash laid out the setting, detailed but so very realistic. I was on the edge several times as the plot twisted. Last Call is a very complex and layered story, and the author brought up many issues I wanted to debate and discuss. I think it might make a good book discussion selection.

Second Review:
I had to read Debra Tash’s “Last Call America” again. Snatches of it kept running through my
head and I needed to revisit them. As with any re-read, I found several details I had missed the
first time. Tiny important nuggets that add richness and believability.
As remembered, her descriptions of emotions, reactions and dedication give depth to her
characters adding a richness that draws the reader into the story. Her research into the use of and
devastation from weapons is impressive and her futuristic weapons actually frightening. One can
only hope such monsters do not yet exist.
But Ms. Tash’s references to the loss of personal freedoms itemized in our Constitution and Bill
of Rights, the ever encroaching Government restrictions, changes in our daily lives, and the
confiscation of property sadly reflect what we are seeing daily – in ever increasing numbers.
It reminds us that we must ban together and insist all of our Government leaders: Federal, State,
County and City begin to honor our Constitution and our Nation.
In today’s world one has to wonder if we might find a Jason Poole, Rebecca Sanders and others
to lead us and demand our United States becomes what it was supposed to be. A Nation “Of the
People, For the People, By the People”.
