About the Author

Hope Ramsay grew up on the North Shore of Long Island, but every summer Momma would pack her off under the care of Aunt Annie to go visiting with relatives in the midlands of South Carolina. Her extended family includes its share of colorful aunts and uncles, as well as cousins by the dozens, who provide the fodder for the characters you'll find in Last Chance, South Carolina. She's a two-time finalist in the Golden Heart and is married to a good ol' Georgia boy who resembles every single one of her heroes. She lives in Fairfax, Virginia, where you can often find her on the back deck, picking on her thirty-five-year-old Martin guitar.

If I wasn't already totally sold on this series, this book would have sealed the deal- a sad little orphaned girl, a cranky cat, a gambler who needs to be someone's sure bet, an allergic preacher, a pretty vet getting a second chance, a bachelor auction, three sweet kittens, and a matchmaker's prophecy. Yep, this was just a whole bowl full of home town goodness. It's a romance set against the backdrop of a quirky, nosey, well-meaning small town between a man and woman who must fall in love with the idea of a family and getting beyond the issues of their pasts.

This is a book far along in the Last Chance series, but it will work just fine as a standalone or out of order. It's more fun reading them in order so the people and their situations popping in and out in the background make more sense, but not absolutely necessary.

The story opens with Mike Taggart arriving in town with a sad, silent, tearful niece, Rainbow, who just watched her mother get murdered and is now stuck with an uncle she never knew who has a lot of conflicting feelings roiling around inside him too. Mike feels guilty over his little half-sister, Angie from the point he left her behind as a kid to get away from an abusive boyfriend of their alcoholic mother to letting her flounder on her own to now, when he has her daughter in tow and has no idea what to do for her other than to bring her to his other half-brother, Timmy. Mike, as a gambler and a guy with issues, knows he is not the person to bring up a little girl and so he feels that the Rev. Timothy Lake his long lost half-brother is a better bet. But first things first, he has to get Rainbow's cat to a vet because the thing seems sick with all its weepy-eyed wheezing and sneezing.

When I started reading Last Chance Family, I was pretty sure how it was going to end. And I was right, and that was alright. The journey I took while reading the book was well worth the trip. Sometimes when you read a book it just clicks with you and you cannot read enough about the characters. This was one of those books for me.

Mike Taggart is a professional gambler who lives in Las Vegas. He is used to being on his own and having no attachments to anyone. But that suddenly changes when he finds himself the legal guardian of his five year old niece, Rainbow. Her mother, his sister was killed right in front of Rainbow and she has not spoken since the murder. Mike takes Rainbow to the small town of Last Chance, where his long-lost brother, Tim, lives. He has not seen his brother since their father took his brother away when they were both very young. His brother is now a minister and Mike feels that Tim will be a much better guardian than he himself could ever be. Now he just has to convince his brother.

Charlene Polk is vet in Last Chance that has her own baggage from her youth. When Charlene was younger, she was forced by her parents to have an abortion for her unplanned baby. She has never forgiven herself or her parents for that decision. She has a long history of picking losers when it comes to the men in her life. When Mike and Rainbow bring in Rainbow’s cat, Tigger, the Demon Cat, to see her because of a cough, she thinks she has met another selfish loser of a man. But she falls hard for Rainbow and decides to make sure that Mike does what is right for his niece.

One of the things I liked the most about this book was the characters.

I have to agree with other reviewers who thought this author should have stopped after the Rhode family stories. It could be me, but despite looking forward to reading this book, Last Chance is starting to wear thin and the characters are getting stale. A lot of this story felt as if the author was just going through the motions and wasn't focused on creating chemistry between H/h. Add to that a Hero who was very much a self-pitying guy (though the rest of him was nice) whose every other thought was about how he'd been abandoned when he was a child. I got it, he had a sad childhood, I didn't need to be reminded of it on almost every page! The heroine was a bit too quick to transfer her crush from David (which she of course had to do!!) to the Hero and thus she seemed shallow and just too too desperate for a husband. The timeline from meeting to HEA was less than two weeks: I just don't buy it. Finally, Last Chance is a happy destination where everyone gets along no matter their religion, race or sexual orientation -- it's a nice fantasy but by the end I was just rolling my eyes at the unbelievability of it all. It was just too too sweet. If you are new to the Last Chance series don't start with this one!

He key characters are there in attendance,Charlene the vet, both churches and their lad is groups, and of course aunt Miriam with he romantic predictions that are always mis interpreted. What's not to love? This time the town meets the unknown pastor Tim's half brother and his unknown niece. There is confused romance and kittens! Always a good read
