This is Davids first novel but not his first book. This novel began life as a play. David successfully remains true to Dickens classic tale. Yet he writes an original story with fresh and fun characters who sing original lyrics (the play was a musical). This Scrooge is the director of a local, annual theater production of A Christmas Carol starring children. Brodwyn Branson is his name. He has a long-suffering and loyal assistant, Max. Max seems to do most the work and she has all the Christmas spirit Brodwyn lacks. While she oversees the rehearsals of the old Carol; M. Branson lives his own, modern Carol with visits from his theater Christmas ghosts. One is a former agent of his one and one an Elvis impersonator, of course!. All the ghosts are just irreverent enough and serious enough to make Brodwyn see the errors of his ways. The original lyrics are fun and the modern day setting proves again that the spirit of Christmas never changes and never gets outdated. I think reading this book might be a fine new tradition to start with children. Sam Walkers illustrations add the perfect touch to this novel.
