Turing disaster into political opportunity

Suffice it to say that the king's prime minister, Cavaho,later the Marques de Pombal, used this disaster (earthquakes and a tsunami) that leveled much of Lisbon and did extensive damage to other parts of the country as an opportunity to remake Portuguese society. He got the Jesuits kicked out, reduced church control of education, and did some very nasty things to nobles he thought were plotting against him. As he didn't have much of a constituency behind him, most of these changes were revoked after the king's death. Pombal did do an excellent job of disaster relief. Though we now remember Voltaire's response to the disaster in his Candide, plenty of people at the time did see the disaster in religious terms that were opposed to Voltaire's point of view.

An enjoyable and informative read, but...

This is a fast-paced, enjoyable read. The reader learns a great deal, not only about the Lisbon earthquake but about Iberian history in the Middle Ages and Early Modern period, and about the European world in the 1700s. For the historian or student of history, however, it is also frustrating because Shrady only cites (endnotes) his sources where he has a quotation. For the rest, the reader has no way of knowing how Schrady arrived at his descriptions, interpretations, or conclusions. This is unfortunate, but probably not Shrady's fault: Penguin, publishing a book for the masses, no doubt forced him to strip his manuscript of his citations, for fear of frightening general readers with a large number of endnotes or footnotes. Someday, perhaps, books like this will come with an access code for an online "author's cut" edition!

Not What the Title Claims

While this is undoubtedly a work involving extensive research, it is not in the same class of historical description of geologic events as Simon Winchester's "Krakatoa" or "Crack in the Edge of the World." In Shrady's work, the earthquake seems more of a reason to write a narrative about Lisbon, Portugal, Europe, trade, conquest, and politics not just spanning the "Last Day" but the better part of 1000 years, even getting into the politics and financial issues of other countries in other centuries.

I had hoped the work actually centered on the quake itself, how the people, structures, landscape were affected during that critical period of the event, just prior to, and right afterwards. These aspects are touched upon in limited detail only compared to the historical/social aspects.

If you wish to know about Lisbon around 1755, particularly how the royalty and nobles dealt with the circumstances, why Lisbon currently held the nobility it held relative to a long religious history and conquest of various European, African, and Asian powers, the details of the transfer of ownership of Lisbon prior to and during the Crusades, etc. then this book is for you. If you are more interested in geological disasasters and their documentation, then check out works like those of Winchester that I noted above.

Like I said, it is well written. It does have some very interesting information. However, the scope of the book isn't nearly as narrowly defined as the title implies.
