There is the usual cast of characters--the evil government, the scientists (both good and bad), and the victims and survivors of the virus. The most poignant story is that of two people trying to survive and having to do things they never thought they would. The victims are people to be pitied because they don't know what is happening to them. It's a lose-lose proposition.
This book is exciting, innovative, suspenseful, and emotional. It is usually difficult for authors to combine all those elements successfully, but it is done in this book. You will care about the people and marvel at the science, and, as in most apocalyptic books, find that humans are their worst enemy. The saying: "Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely", is proven, once again, in this book.
