I got half way through. Perhaps the plot improved later, perhaps it didn't. I'll never know, because Mr Boatman didn't offer enough for me to care to continue to the end.
I gave 2 stars because I liked Mr Boatman in China Beach. I am deleting the novel from my account.

Funny thing happened: after writing the above review, I read some of the 3 star reviews and discovered that this novel might get interesting a bit after the point where I stopped reading. So I started again - and those reviewers were correct!!! I agree with the person who said Lando's relationship with son HH is the best part of the book. I actually got tears in my eyes.
However, I don't necessarily think that Mr Boatman's joke/punchline/message precludes that there is no God or that we shouldn't pray. It never hurts to give thanks for the good things in one's life.
So now I'm changing this from a 2 star review to a 3 star and will not delete it.
This novel is both divine mystery and divine comedy. Lando Cooper, a stand-up comic poised on the edge of fame, who has a beautiful, smart girlfriend named Suhrabi, is the Judeo-Christian God in human form. He's given up His divinity after so many eons to be a regular guy.
Only there's nothing regular about a guy Formerly Known as God who has older, far more bellicose deities willing to destroy entire cities on Earth in their attempts to kill him. Lando handles it all in stride while defending Himself and mankind, and trying to discover who wants him dead and why, all while working up the courage to propose to Suhrabi.
Boatman writes with sure and strong imagery, his humour at times light and sparkling while coarse and brutal at others. Both aspects will leave you belly-laughing.
Last God Standing is populated by a cast of peculiar and clever characters -- Lando's flirtatious, foul-mouthed mother; his business-owner father famous for his ridiculous local commercials; Lando's agent, Yuri, his best friend and confidante.
Boatman plucked characters from numerous world religions and mythologies to further populate Lando's world: from Zeus, Baron Samedi and Amon-Ra to Benzaiten, the Japanese goddess of love and fortune. One of the funniest scenes in the book involves Dionysus and the results of his tampering with Lando's wine during dinner with his (hopefully) future in-laws.
Last God Standing is an enjoyable combination of mystery, divinity, absurdity, and humour that comes very close to defining the nature of man and his place in the universe. Comparatively speaking, those who enjoyed The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and Kurt Vonnegut's Slapstick will totally get Last God Standing...
So, this actor, Michael Boatman, decided to become a writer. He wrote some short stories and a novel, Revenant Road. He continued acting, because, c'mon, if you ain't Stephen King, you ain't making the big bucks, am I right?
Anyway, this Boatman guy decided to write a second novel. Yeah, what was he thinking, right? Well, apparently, he was thinking he would write a funny, profound look at religion and the human condition.
What he came up with was Last God Standing, the story of Lando Cooper, who just happens to be the human incarnation of the Judeo-Christian God. Lando wants to be a stand-up comedian, and he would really like to marry his girlfriend, But, stick with me here, not only does ordinary life get in the way, but archaic gods keep showing up and trying to kill him. Ain't that just a kick in the pants?
Here's the thing, This Michael Boatman guy, besides being pretty good at the acting thing, is a pretty good writer, as well. His characters are over-the-top crazy, but you can't help but care about them. Well, most of them. some of them are *BLEEP*ing crazy *BLEEP*ers.
(Sorry about that. These matinee reviews are PG-13. Come back after midnight, if you want the "blue" review.)
Where was I? Oh, yeah. The characters are great. The action scenes are well written and exciting. The old gods are very entertaining. And, here's the kicker, if you want to, you can look a little deeper, and maybe, just maybe, think about what you believe, and what it all means. Me? I just wanted to be entertained, and that's what I got.
I hope you aren't looking for a punchline. This is an observational review. I suppose, if I'm forced to go out on a laugh, I'll just say this: read Last God Standing, or the joke's on you.
