I really enjoyed this short story. It's a succinct, high-fantasy tale that grabs you from the very start as you follow the fate of the last hero.

Fantasy stories really should be called "tales." They have to almost have a rhythm to them like the old epic poems told by the ancient Greeks. It helps to capture that sense of heroes and deeds that are larger than life. One of the things I enjoyed the most about this short story was how adeptly this author mimics that style.

Equally impressive is that the author throws you into an exciting world of sprawling high-fantasy but does it in less than 4,000 words. With the genre's hard-earned reputation of being long-winded, this story was like a breath of fresh air.

Fantastic job and a highly recommended read.

I absolutely loved this short story, it almost plays out as the final scene of an epic fantasy. It is very well done, especially with how the last hero left isn't much of a hero, he's a nobody that just happens to be the last one alive. I loved how the Evil Lord kept trying to figure out who the hero was, as it allowed a little exposition, where the reader learned about what lead up to this short story, but in a very unique way. I'm just a little sad that it was so short, although it was composed beautifully, so more length could have lessened the story's effect. Overall, I would definitely recommend this short story by Ben Dobson.

This little fantasy short is a delightful read for the fan. From the very first paragraph you feel the weight of the struggle that has gone before, a gruesome quest that has taken a horrible toll on those who would fight the darkness. What is a hero? And are all heroes recognized for what they are? A 5-10 minute read that is very well written.

Well written ... excellent and lyrical prose ... a good idea well executed ... I would have liked but can imagine for myself a brief epilogue ... I want sacrifice to result in good because I like hope but this story could have different epilogues for different people ... it makes you think which is one feature of a great story.
