I have enjoyed the Hitman series since the beginning with its dangerous and charming anti heroes and intelligent lively heroines who always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. The dark action packed suspenseful story lines always blend well with the lush romances, vivid intense descriptions, and engaging dialogue. As with all the Hitman books, the main characters are all connected to one another through a soft arc but all the books can be read as stand alone’s.

Last Hope brings to the forefront a secondary character that has been alluded to throughout the series-Rafe Mendoza. A Colombian native, Rafe grew up in abject poverty to a religiously fanatic mother who abused him. His childhood shaped him into the man he is now a mercenary with a huge heart. It’s this huge heart that helped him to create Tears of God; an island where he provides sanctuary for those in need. He has some issues, one of which is rather LARGE and becomes the focus of this story. And that is where my problems with the story started.

Last Hope was not what I expected. While the story is well written; Clare and Frederick are talented writers and no matter the storyline, their voices and skills are a strong force to be reckoned with, there was a silliness to the story, especially the romance, that seemed to come out of left field. This series is normally dark and gritty. Violence is the norm of the series that up until now revolved around the mysterious Bratva. Going into this installment I expected the same and more. The beginning starts out promising. Mendoza has been conducting surveillance on the woman who holds the key to the release of one of his team members who was kidnapped.

What an absolute pile a trash. I only got to 19% when I closed the book in disgust. How is it possible that this juvenile, ridiculous, one dimensional slapped together book is written by the same author duo as the first 3 hitman books? Leaving aside the ridiculous plot of an illegal 100 million dollar deal needing to be handled by some random model who has not a single skill that would facilitate or protect the deal better than the hardened criminals making the deal, just the skill level of the author writing this was really subpar. I just can’t wrap my head around the fact that this is the same duo that wrote Regan’s gut wrenching story. Well this series is definitely off of my auto buy list now, I’ll be reading the sample and reviews first for now on, no more preorder from me. I can’t believe I paid 10 dollars for this trash.

Edit:
Ok that was a really rude review. So my feeling on the book are the same but I decided to change my rating from 1 star to 2 stars. I was harsh and rated the book as if in comparison to the other books in the series. I have certainly read much worse than this and when comparing this book with the same standard that I do other books, I feel that 2, maybe 2.5 stars is a more fair rating.

Let me start by saying that Daniel and Regan are my absolute favorite couple of this series. Their book sucked me in from the beginning and I couldn't put it down to the last word. I have reread their book several times and have loved it just as much as the first time I read it. The reason I brought this up is because IMO I think this author is capable of awesome, unfortunately Last Hope which is Rafe and Ava's story was terrible. I thought the whole story line focusing on the size of his penis was utterly ridiculous and it ruined the book for me. I'm sorry but I couldn't get pass the whole Godzilla thing or Ava's super vagina that was able to save the day because of love. She was able to do what no woman could do in all his years not even paid prostitutes. Add in some cheesy action and a sappy ending and that was it. I'm still not ready to give up on this author because like I said I'm still waiting for my next Daniel and Regan so I will give the next book a try.

At first I thought this was going to be a terrible book because it seemed way too focused on s*x and his size (I know, I know) especially during times of great stress (which my husband assures me is almost impossible - a man isn't [and can't be] thinking with "that" when he's in a kill or be killed situation or running for his life while protecting a woman). It got so ridiculous I almost gave up on the book which would have been a first for me with this author. But, if things like that improbability bug you, hold on because the book gets better... far, far better. We even get past his size (which, honestly, almost ruined the book for me because it went on and on and on...).

It finally segues into a typical Jessica Clare novel - fast paced, great visual (I want to live on the island, too!) and excellent secondary characters. Others have said it better so I'll just say, first get past the beginning (please) then be prepared to be moved and care for the hero and heroine. Also I love that there is a great set up for other stories for the secondary characters. They are so real, you just HAVE to know their story and hope for their happily ever after, too. So if you're paying attention Mizz Clare, please please write stories for Norse, Bennito, Davidson... all the guys, please?!?!?

And I received an ARC in exchange for this review. Lucky me!
