First, the balance between overpowered and underpowered main characters was perfect. Usually authors go one of two ways, they make the characters so OP that it breaks the narrative or they don't make the character OP at all and then they struggle to make a single player relevant among all of the others. I think secretly as gamers, we all want our MC to be a little OP and this novel nails that balance.
Second, the book genuinely tried to balance the "outside world" and "game world" rather well. There were periods where the characters had to leave the game and yet the plot mechanic never felt like it intruded upon the story line or the world-building. It was actually cleverly done so that logging out was done so that time could pass and smooth transitions between chapters would make more sense.
Third, the author stayed away from the common "I make money off of the game world" theme and instead opted to use older MC's that were retired. This was an inspired solution to a common plot device and I found that it worked better than many of the other reasons that authors use to explain how their MC can spend so many hours inside of a game and not have to worry about real life. My only critique of this particular strategy is that the "real world" needed a bit more fleshing out to make the characters more believable.
Finally, the world building was well done for a first novel in a series. It wasn't overdone but things like fast travel and world size made it easy to grasp. Additionally, making city names mashups of real life locations was a great touch.
The reason I gave this book only 4 out of 5 stars is because of the writing. The author had a few subplots that seemed unnecessary and only used to engender affection for the characters that would otherwise be bland. Schinhofen's characters all sounded like the same person speaking from different mouths and this really showed whenever one of the characters would have a speech or any long kind of text. All of the diction, phrasing, and speech patterns were indistinguishable from the other main characters. This detracted from the things they were trying to say and made conversations between the characters sound forced as if one person was trying to a hold a conversation with themselves. There were grammatical and spelling errors that broke the reader from the experience and another round or two of editing wouldn't go amiss. In the grand scheme of things, these issues didn't overly detract from the experience and I would enthusiastically recommend this book to any LitRPG fans.
This book proves that you are young as long as you feel that way.
Besides the compliments there is an editing issue. Misspelling In every page, which is annoying and have to re-read some several times to understand what the author wanted.. that may need tó be fixed to enjoy it without annoyance.
