I'm an educator. I've been an educator for over 20 years. This book's reading level is at mid 3rd grade, but a comprehension level of 5th-6th grade. The concepts are too far advanced for a 3rd or 4th grader to truly understand (without possible nightmares). The plot of the story, and characters, is designed for 5th grade readers and older. There are zombies and pictures of zombies. There are quotes from the zombies like "Go my children. Feast". Honestly, it reminded me of an episode of The Walking Dead...would you let your 8 or 9 year old watch that show? (I like the show, but I wouldn't let my kiddos watch it until they were at least 12 because they just don't get that it's 100% NOT REAL). Anyway, I'd say readers in 6th grade and older would enjoy the book, but any kid younger than that may be confused and/or scared. DO NOT let a kid under 7 read this book (trust me! my younger kiddos - 4 yrs, 5 yrs & 7 yrs - looked at this book and said "NO WAY!"

I highly recommend this one for girls and boys who like adventure, suspense, lots of humor, and a good dose of popular culture (ages 8-12). Jack, who usually wields his powerful weapon, the Louisville Slicer, is witty and a good guy. He and his buddies (the Last Kids) are kind of a family now and June is one of the gang. They look out for the good monsters, fight the bad ones, and keep getting into all sorts of scrapes while trying to save the world and save a certain person from becoming a zombie. You won’t want to put the book down. Holgate’s humorous illustrations tell the story too, like comics/manga; he's got a mean drawing hand and he knows what monsters look like. For parents, hidden in the excitement, some new, cool vocabulary words. You may already know…kids LOVE this series. Librarians will tell you that Brallier's Last Kids books don't stay on the shelves very long.

My son has been reading these since he was 9 and the first one came out. I have a horrible time getting him into books--he reads chapter 1 and never picks them up again. This is the only series where he continually hounds me to check when the next book is coming out. He is now 11 and was so excited to see this, and so mad I made him wait to open it for Christmas. He's in the middle of it now and said to me last night, "I can't wait to read tonight--the book is great!"
Another reviewer posted that this was not appropriate for younger children. I think it depends on the adult and the child. My daughter read the first one when she was 7 and had no trouble understanding it, nor was she disturbed by it. I bought the first one for my 7-year-old nephew for Christmas, and he's loving it. They're both good readers and generally pretty mature. I have also read parts of the book, and didn't see anything that would dissuade me from giving it to them. But you know you and you're children best, and the opinion/decision is yours.

I buy these books for my 10 year old and loved the first 3 of the series so much I pre-ordered this one without a second thought. He was so excited when the mail arrived that he turned off Fortnite to immediately start reading this!

My son is 7 and a pretty good reader for his age, he flew through these books! Could not put them down! They might be a touch above his maturity level and I usually try to keep him away from the zombie scene, but he picked up the first one at a bookstore while we were on vacation and I caved. So glad I did. It really resparked his love of reading.

Jack, June, Dirk, and Quint are still stuck in Wakefield - a giant snowstorm derailed the plans they had when we last saw them, which was to go on to New York where a group of surviving humans has been broadcasting from the Statue of Liberty. Now that they know they aren't the only survivors, Quint and June are quite keen to get back to their folks. Dirk has been strangely silent, and Jack simply has no one to get back to, orphan that he was pre-apocalypse. At the moment, though, no one is going anywhere because of said snowstorm. As it turns out, another problem is that all the monsters are deathly afraid of this winter wonderland. The kids decide to show them snow is not scary, but every effort ends in one of them getting hurt, so that isn't going well. Then Jack and June decide the answer is Christmas - they will show them the wonder of Christmas, and the monsters will love winter forever. Of course, the best laid plans... Soon the kids find out another surviving human is closer than they had thought. For example, they discover a human in Wakefield itself. Evie turns out to be one of the bad guys, though - another Cosmic servant trying to unleash even more terrible monsters on Earth. Another battle seems ripe to unfold, as the kids know they have to stop her from making things worse.
Action and adventure from a kid's point of view is a whole lot of fun. Our heroes are game for anything, and they have a solid understanding of right vs. wrong. Our villains are very villainous, and in each book this leads to some intense fight scenes and creative solutions. This series continues to be well-written with exciting graphics, the stories have plenty of heart-felt moments while still moving the action forward, pacing is steady, and in this instance there were some tense scenes where I really wasn't sure which way the story would go.

I preordered it months ago. The previous three books were wonderful. My 10 year old was hooked with the first book. This arrived Tuesday and I tossed him the package. He opened it up and was excited like it was Christmas. I’ve never found a book series that he’s been so hooked on. These books are great!! Highly recommend!

Edge of pages missing!?

My son loves this cartoon, unfortunately a few chapters in the edge of the pages had been cut off! I have never come across this. Amazon refunded and we got to keep the book which with a bit of deduction was still readable. Wouldn't order another from this seller though just in case!
