Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) is still recovering from fighting a defining battle that saved Wessex for King Alfred (David Dawson) but which came at a huge personal price. Mourning for those he has lost, Uhtred begins a voyage north to reclaim his own fate: to avenge Earl Ragnar's death and recapture his ancestral lands. Alfred's conviction to create a united England is stronger than ever and he sets his sights on the wild lands of the north, which have fallen into chaos and rebellion. It is a dangerous time for Saxon and Dane alike but Alfred champions a new king – a Christian Dane – to unite the tribes. Uhtred is faced with questions of fate and duty as he continues to fight for the country of his birth, against the people of his upbringing. With a newfound love, it seems he may finally be on his chosen path but in times of rivalrous factions, bloodshed and shocking betrayal Uhtred is tested like never before.

The Last Kingdom, since around halfway through season 1, has developed some of the most dynamic characters in any show now on. Characters you've hated you will love, characters you've loved you will grow to hate.
The standout accomplishment of this season is the development of Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the main character and protagonist. Whereas in season 1 I felt he was one of the least interesting characters who served only as a device by which to highlight the conflict between Dane and Saxon, this season he has proven a heroic, admirable, tough, and dynamic character. Rather than his character changing based on seemingly fleeting relationship-based allegiances to a particular Dane or Saxon, he is molded by powerful experiences that grant a deep insight into who this character is internally.
This season; Eric Thurgilson, Halig, Odda, Father Beocca, Uhtred, and others undergo fascinating changes that will grab your attention, force their way into your sympathies, and give you a fantastic character based experience not offered by any show currently on television.
There are occasional (very, very occasional) bits of weak writing that can disrupt your immersion temporarily and very slightly, but one of the great things about The Last Kingdom both last season and this season is that the strength of the characters makes these small errors forgivable and renders them forgettable.
If you enjoy Vikings or Game of Thrones, you will enjoy The Last Kingdom. You get all the court intrigue, the faction based conflict, and much of the action with the benefit of stronger, more relatable characters to follow and care for.
If only I could find a doctor unethical enough to induce a medical coma until the next season arrives!
The production value is even higher than Season 1 (e.g. the Lunden set).
This is some of the best historical fiction on TV.
The fight sequences are awesome and visceral.
The acting is fantastic.
You get to see Uhtred as a friggin' galley slave.
Yeah, 95% of it is completely made up. Who cares?
Bring on Season 3!
This is a very good series and both my wife and I look forward to seeing at least one more season - and hopefully another beyond that. Anyone who has enjoyed The Vikings will easily sit to watch this. In many respects this is that story from the viewpoint of the Kings and subjects in what would eventually become a unified England.
