In 2002, the world changes forever. Every man, every boy, every mammal with a Y chromosome everywhere on Earth suddenly collapses and dies. With the loss of nearly half the planet’s population, the gears of society grind to a halt, and a world of women are left to pick up the pieces and try to keep civilization from collapsing entirely.
The “gendercide,” however, is not absolutely complete. For some unknown reason, one young man named Yorick Brown and his pet male monkey, Ampersand, are spared. Overnight, this anonymous twentysomething becomes the most important person on the planet — the key, it is hoped, to unlocking the secret of the mysterious sex-specific plague.
For Yorick himself, the most important person on the planet has been agonizingly out of reach. But now, after three long years and 10,000 arduous miles, the last man is closing in on the truth about his lost fiancée — and the shocking facts behind his own survival.

Social commentary from the key characters. Otherwise a great novel with interesting plot !
Volume 4 includes the stories from the Paper Dolls and Kimono Dragons paperbacks, meaning we're 4/5 through the entire series after this one. This volume is what puts the 'epic' in Yorick's epic journey around the world, as we find him in Australia, Japan, and China. A lot of back-story is included here, as we learn about Dr. Mann's, 355's, and Alter's troubled pasts, as well as the secret history behind Ampersand. Clues about the origin of the plague are popping up, though there is still much shrouded in mystery. The top-notch storytelling we've experienced throughout the series continues on, and Yorick and Co.'s story is just as exciting as ever. I particularly enjoyed Yorick's adventures in Japan, as we learn more about how that culture has coped with the loss of all the men.
Needless to say, I look forward to the final deluxe edition , which is sure to finish off this exciting story with a bang. Highly recommended!
So, the thing to like about this volume is how tightly written it's plot is. Things happen in these 12 issues, they happen very quickly, and they change the game for the entire world. The character backstories are also quite good, ratcheting up the development in what was already one of the best 'character' comics I've ever read.
The downside? Quite a few dumb plot points are used to keep the story going. Characters seem to be incompetent because the plot demands it. Fortunately, I don't think this should carry over to the last volume. Here's hoping this series ends on a high note.
No Spoilers!
The comic takes more time in developing extensive history behind the characters. I've read that many fans found it to be boring but I was unable to get bored considering I was already in love with the world and the characters and was more than open to read an entire book that is basically the design of the calm before the storm.
In film terms: This book is basically the point in the movie when it presents all the problems that the protagonists are going to have to face in the last fourth of the movie. Basically the end of the 5th sequence and presenting the 6th sequence just at the end of the second act.
Enjoy and worth the money to own.
If you are into SHTF stories from alternate perspectives, then this is a must read.
If you wanna see an adventure about a boy & his monkey, then this is a must read.

As the series progresses, it gets better and better. It's a simple basic premise, the death of all male creatures bar two, a young man and his pet monkey, that could have been handled in some very obvious, and very crass, ways. To the creators' credit, it never is. It's handled with tact, wit, intelligence, and an admirable lack of the usual comic-book sexism. The twists and turns of the plot are full of genuine surprises, usually character-driven. The little group that accumulates around the last man all have fascinating back-stories that are explored with dexterity and woven into the central narrative. The result is that it's not just the underlying mystery as to who or what caused the death of all the other males that keeps the reader coming back for more, it's genuine engagement with these people and all their human foibles, frailties, humour, hopes, fears, foolishness, regrets, courage, pain, love, and dreams.
The artwork also grows on the reader as the series progresses. To begin with, it seems perfectly adequate, though perhaps not particularly outstanding. The more you read, however, the more you realise just what a vital part the deceptively simple, clean, clear style plays in carrying the story along.
Like all good comic books, it's the combination of writing and graphics that makes the whole work so well. And work it does. For me, this series joins such keynote works as Watchmen and Sandman as one of the few genuinely outstanding 'proper' novels in the medium, demonstrating what a great medium for storytelling the graphic medium can be in the right hands. Wonderful stuff!
The plots are broadened and glimpses of how everything started/will end is slowly released.
The series i believe ends with the next book.
