Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Last Man Standing has the essential elements of a terrific David Baldacci novel: a tough but tender-hearted hero, dirty dealings in the nation's bureaucracy, and a roller-coaster plot. Web London, a member of the FBI's Hostage Rescue Team, froze up on a drug raid and thus became the sole survivor of a remote-controlled ambush that killed six of his compatriots. Now the only witness has disappeared and the inside man on the botched raid has gone underground.

As a pretty psychiatrist puzzles over the corners of Web's brain that kept him alive, Web himself stays on the move. He's certain that the ambush is connected to the prison escape of a neofascist leader, Ernest B. Free, whom he helped arrest five years earlier, and a series of new murders leads him to a Virginia horse farm and the driving force behind all the carnage. It may seem as though Baldacci gives away the mastermind too soon, but both the bad guys and the good guys are complex enough that there's plenty of punch all the way to the last page. --Barrie Trinkle

From Publishers Weekly

Last year's Wish You Well, a historical family drama set in rural Virginia, proved that Baldacci, previously known for his thrillers (particularly his debut, Absolute Power), can do much more than supply maximum suspense. His latest is another exciting thriller, but one that hasn't forsaken the ambitions of Wish You Well, plumbing the emotions and exploring the shadings of human nature in an impressive way. And for the first time, Baldacci has created characters that readers will demand to see back in a sequel. He has chosen an immensely interesting subject: the (real-life) FBI Hostage Rescue Team, a force so elite that many of the Seals, Delta Force grads and other special ops who apply to it don't make the cut. Baldacci's hero is hostage rescue team superstar Web London, who inexplicably (to himself and others) freezes during an operation that leaves the rest of his team dead; hence, the book's title. Web's investigation into the massacre involves him with several bands of criminals, most notably a white supremacist terrorist cell, a gang of D.C. drug peddlers headed by a charismatic giant, and a secret group involved in both terror and drug activities. At the same time, Web's exploration into why he froze leads him to psychoanalysis and hypnosis, to budding romance and, ultimately, to revelations that tie together all the strands and questions of the immensely complicated plot. This is Baldacci's most accomplished thriller. The action, conspiratorial and overt, shifting from urban to rural and back, is nearly nonstop and expertly drawn; heroes and villains alike are believable and equally flawed; and there's a newfound maturity of tone here, a somber acceptance of the suffering that necessarily attends human life. (On-sale Nov. 6)Forecast: The American flag waving on the book's cover will draw readers' eyes; the strong title and the Baldacci name will carry them to the cash register. Expect hefty sales. Simultaneous audio cassette (abridged and unabridged), audio CD (abridged) and large-print editions.

David Baldacci has been writing since childhood, when his mother gave him a lined notebook in which to write down his stories. (Much later, when David thanked her for being the spark that ignited his writing career, she revealed that she'd given him the notebook to keep him quiet, "because every mom needs a break now and then.")

David published his first novel, ABSOLUTE POWER, in 1996. The feature film adaptation followed, with Clint Eastwood as its director and star. In total, David has published 50 novels for adults; all have been national and international bestsellers and several have been adapted for film and television. His novels have been translated into over 45 languages and sold in more than 80 countries, with 150 million copies sold worldwide. David has also published seven novels for younger readers.

David is also the cofounder, along with his wife, of the Wish You Well Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting literacy programs across the United States.

Best Baldacci novel I've read

Best Baldacci novel I've read
I have read a great many of David Baldacci's fine collection of great novels. And I've greatly enjoyed them all since 1] they are page turners, 2] when I finish one, I really look forward to starting to read another, 3] the multiple complex characters are so well developed, 4] I can NEVER figure out how it will end. And Last Man Standing is tops in all those aforementioned reasons why he is a favorite of mine,

David Baldacci has done it again. He has jumped into a new genre of topics and has produced a book that was a wonderful read. It has action, suspense, and a little gratuitous sex thrown in at the end for good measure. I read this in less than a week. It wasn't until the very end that everything became clear, and the pieces fit like a glove. I hate when I read a story and I find the pieces don't fit together, but in true Baldacci style even though the story line was convoluted at first but this was by design. Our hero had to go through hell but being in the pre-verbal s$%^t is nothing new. But our hero does weather the storm but when he exits the other side what we have is a new Baldacci hero that I see numerous stories in. If you like to read a story based around one of the heroes of our society, with a plethora demons that dog him but he also has a large contingent of friends who also will stand behind him and help him to prevail. Great book.

You have to love Baldacci if you love suspense. As per his usual style he has created a completely gripping novel with more twists and turns than a mountain road. The characters are larger than life, but don't we all need a little escapism? And don't we all really need to belive in heros? The main character, Web London, is a tortured hero, but a hero through and through. He finds himself fighting on many fronts, even one in his own mind. And while he never knows who to trust, you know you can trust him. Even some of the not-so-good characters turn out to have a heroic streak. And there are a lot of characters to keep track of.
The plot was intricate. I have to admit I wasn't sure where it was going until very near the end. The wrap up was a little coincidental for my taste and there were times where the prose was a bit forced. Bodies litter the sidelines of this story, so it is not for the faint of heart. The motion starts on page one and never stops. The ending wraps it all up nicely and lays way for more of Web London...?
On the whole I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed it and lost sleep to read it.

Another excellent book by David Baldacci. So many of his books have twist and turns and you can't just put the book down until you've finished. This books is no exception in the story of Web London, a member of an elite HRT team coming upon a drug bust that goes horribly wrong with all members of Web's team dead except himself who froze at the crucial moment of the attack. Of course Web is feeling overwhelming grief as to what happened and so the story goes in this book. Since many reviewers have gone over the plot of this books in the other reviews, I will go onto say that Mr. Baldacci has such talent in his writing and researching that when explaining scene you feel like you are right there or when explaining legal procedures and processes he's right on. Many of his characters are woman, who are in law enforcement, and who carry themselves as very strong woman figures which I love. Read this book, excellent story and you will not want to put it done until you have finished it.

Once I got past page 30 for the 5th time I settled into the book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Very long even by the author's standards but a solid read. There is quite a bit going on and you'll find yourself flipping back to earlier parts to connect the pieces. Take notes if you must if you take too long to read it through. Looking forward to picking up book from Baldacci.

This is a page turner and our new hero, WEB is one tough and stubborn individual.
Hate people of power, who got there not by what they know, but what they didn’t know. The longest chapter in the book is toward the end and thank you, Mr. Baldashi for not chopping it up!
