"Entertaining and enlightening, The Last Mile is a rich novel that has much to offer...In the best Baldacci tradition, the action is fast and furious. But The Last Mile is more than a good action thriller. It sheds light on racism, a father-son relationship and capital punishment. Both Mars and Decker are substantive, solid characters....Utterly absorbing."―Associated Press

I enjoy murder mysteries and thrillers, because I am a good guesser. I did guess correctly, but not because the story was particularly a predictable retread. The characters were well thought out and the story also had a social message.
I liked Melvin Mars a lot. I won't say why, and even though the most of the villains had no redeeming features, which I generally think makes a story too black and white, when life has so many gray areas, but Mr. Baldacci painted very successfully with black, white, gray and a full array of colors.
Thanks David, I could barely wait to find out what happens, but it was as always with a good story bittersweet, because when you are done, and things have been resolved one way or another you are done.
Fortunately for me you are quite prolific and there are more stories for me to try.
As part of a specially-appointed team of Federal investigators, Amos Decker works through the evidence, such as is offered, digging for any hint of motives for the murder of Mars' parents. The team stirs up a hornet's nest where nothing is what it seems to be--and finds each step countered by others.
Two more murders and a kidnapping occur, signs that whatever they are on to, it's big. And their lives, especially those of Amos and Melvin, are on the line.
THE LAST MILE is a meaty, sink-into-the-story mystery. David Baldacci knows how to write a story, getting me in hook, line and sinker.
A tense style, twists that would blow you away, and a great ending has me hankering for more.
I cannot WAIT for the next Amos Decker book!!
David Baldacci is good with pace, his twists and turns make you want to keep reading. However there were a few things that didn't seem to kept the story flowing well - the kidnapping of Lisa; seems she got forgotten about part way through. Then the ending was rushed.
If you're a fan of David Baldacci you'll read it, just not as good as Memory Man.
Three and a half stars.
