I am a time travel fan. Always begin with the positive. I did read it to the end. I wanted to see what happened. Spoiler alert: it does not end. And I won't be purchasing the sequel. Thankfully, this book was an Amazon freebie.
The writing is sophomoric. As are the characters. There are no real details, no nuance. The bits of history that are included seem taken from Encyclopedia Britannica or for today's readers, Wikipedia.
Some of the errors are so egregious as to be unbelievable because they cannot be blamed on editing. Simple stupidity. Here are two. One of the 21st century characters is reminiscing about an encounter in Afganistan in 2020. Although he is now in the year 218 B.C. (if you want to be picky, BCE would be more correct), he thinks the encounter was two centuries in the future, instead of actually two millennia. In another instance, using sign language, an ancient Gaul, signs "I love you" by pointing to her eye, her heart, and the person she loves. Really??
The editing seems nonexistent. And the author requires some education. Either that, or he is simply taking some easy outs while assuming his readers are idiots.

Review
"Sergeant James Alexander and his crew have cheated death. Where they landed when they abandoned their plane isn't nearly as important as the century they landed in. Small things around them begin to add up very quickly as they try desperately to acclimate themselves to their surroundings only to find themselves left with more questions than answers. As they venture out, they begin to meet more and more people with weapons unlike their own who are not in any way fearful of the soldiers. One thing leads to another and Alexander's crew begins to realize they have fallen into the past with no foreseeable escape.
The Last Mission of the Seventh Cavalry by Charley Brindley tells the tale of a group of soldiers bound for Afghanistan when fate intervenes with a plan none of them could have predicted. Brindley's cast of characters is unique, and their banter, despite their extreme circumstances, is refreshing and engaging. The dynamic between characters feels true to life, and their exchanges mimic genuine relationships between coworkers.
There is no lack of action in Brindley's work. From the first chapter, his characters are entrenched in a battle to understand their situation that moves quickly into a battle for their lives. Readers who appreciate well-drawn fight sequences and intricately described battle scenes, will appreciate Brindley's work.
Cover to cover, the characters' reactions to their surroundings and the people they encounter serve as a wonderful contrast to the time period in which they have found themselves. Brindley throws in the perfect number of references to modern technology in juxtaposition to the primitive weapons and lack of simple things we take for granted such as calendars and clocks. Consistency is key in books of this genre, and Brindley manages that with ease.
One of the most endearing aspects of Brindley's cast of characters is the compassion shown by Alexander's crew during a time of war. Characters one might expect to be brash and full of cold reactions in time of war are actually tenderhearted and loving. Their desire to tend to the injured and not only assist the wounded but provide genuine comfort is captivating. These traits add another layer to the already engaging characters.
History buffs will enjoy Brindley's work. The author has gone to great lengths to include historically accurate information in his writing. Watching as the inhabitants of the past experience bits and pieces of the future is as fascinating as it is entertaining.
Rarely does one find a truly perfect blend of past and present, but Brindley has given just that to his readers. Memorable characters wrapped in a unique story line make for one fantastic read and lay the groundwork for what I hope are more books with Alexander's crew."

I was looking forward to the concept, which was pretty cool! But... Holy cow, I just couldn't take the 1. clear (GLARING) lack of military knowledge, and 2. social justice.
1. The Cav are mounted infantry, not Airborne. The Army hasn't issued M-16s in 20 years, and .45s in 35. AR receivers are aluminum, not steel. Flak jackets have been out for decades, and armor is worn over blouses, not under. Bayonets haven't been issued since forever. Address an Army NCO as "Sir," and see what happens. On, and on, and on... I don't expect 100% authenticity, but come on! A little time on Google would have solved most of this, allowing for my suspension of disbelief.
2. The females are brilliant, awesome butt-kickers, and the men are incompetent dingbats. That about sums it up there. *eyeroll*...
With all the above distractions, I had a hard time noting writing style. So, no assessment there. Didn't notice any typos in the five or six chapters I made it through. Glad the book was free, or I'd be pissed.

The characters in this novel are wonderful in their diverse personalities. It makes their adventure all the more interesting and it is impossible not to care about them. I loved the dialogue and how they developed such a deep camaraderie in the face of such overwhelming circumstances. It is a testament to their strength to see how the author guides them to deal with their challenges.
The story lands these unlikely people back, way back, in time. Hannibal crossing the Alps complete with all the fanfare, elephants, an army that exceeds any other and true grit is a unique setting to discover for a group of hard tack Marines. I really enjoyed reading this novel and I can say from my perspective, it has all the elements of a fascinating story. I would love to see it made into a film.

I do not make the comparison to Eric Flint's novels without good cause. However, the company of 7th Cavalry Soldiers who find themselves shifts to 218 B.C.E. have far fewer resources than the protagonists of Flint's books. However, they do quickly attach themselves to a nearby army column on the march -- that of Hannibal as he prepares to lead his army and elephants over the Alps to engage the Roman forces.
What follows is a history altering campaign leading to the death of one Empire and the rise of another.

I love military SciFi and time travel stories. Moreover, as a Vietnam veteran of the US Army Special Forces, I love stories involving paratroopers or special ops soldiers. In this book, Charley Brindley combines all of those elements as well as an alternate history theme involving Hannibal in the Second Punic War. The characters are well drawn, the action believable and the story line is well conceived. A very enjoyable read.

The 7th Cavalry rides again as they set out to rescue three Astronauts from the space station who used a Soyuz escape pod to return to Earth. Along the way they will face several powerful foes and make some new allies. Eventually they will venture to Carthage and beyond to return Liada's Elephant, Obolus, to their homeland.

The movement of military from the present to the past has been done numerous times. Here is a new approach, not changing WW2 or the American Civil War, but much further back to the Roman Pubic Wars. The author does not include a miracle universal translator, not endless supplies of materials from the 21st century. And this is a good thing. Wrapped up well and finished ok.

The book is very easy to read and follow. The characters are well thought out and you learn but and pieces about them as you go. It's a very interesting take on what could happen if one could go back in time. I usually hate endings of books, it's as if the writer loses their minds or something. This book was different. I enjoyed the ending! It was completely plausible!! Kudos Charley Brindley!

I found this fascinating. When a plane full of both male and female US soldiers gets downed, they discover they have slipped through a time portal and are caught up in the battles between Hannibal and the Romans. Decisions have to be made, a side has to be chosen. And they must also decide whether to let history as they know it run its course or whether they can use their advance knowledge.
Alliances are formed, relationship built, lives from both times connect, and they are drawn into the fibre of daily life while they are trying to find a portal back home.
There are a lot of battles, and these are soldiers so expect a lot of descriptions of the fighting and tactics. I did gloss over some of these but overall, I enjoyed the story and got drawn in.
There is a cerain amount of bad language including several uses of the F word, but it wsn't too excessive. There are some scenes of violence but they are not gratuitious.

They have fallen through time and space. Now they are in 216 BC caught up in Hannibal's attack across the Alps on Rome. What's the plan for tomorrow is to find a way to get back home to their own time. The are introducing changes to history as we know it. At first small things and increases in complexity and effect on the historical out come. How much is too much?

Interesting story of modern day troopers in a bermuda triangle style wormhole through time. They must find a purpose and a way to live - and, if they're lucky, a way back.

I was hooked right away into this time travel tale with a twist! The action, personalities and attention to detail kept me reading long after bedtime! I wish there was a book two out or coming out soon. I'm surely hoping the story doesn't end here. Thanks for a wonderful read!
