Now in his seventh decade, Bukowski is preoccupied with death, but in such a way that he spices his usual flat monotone with bits of welcome humor. While continuing his focus on life in bars and at the racetrack, these poems enlarge the meditative tone begun in You Get So Alone at Times That It Just Makes Sense ( LJ 1/87). Bukowski remembers the first time he read great authors or heard classical composers; he reflects on old friends, co-workers, and lovers, but with a new gentleness, as in "Darkling," a wonderfully lyric love poem to his wife. Poems such as this make it easier to spot the poetic craft at work behind Bukowski's understated common speech. About the Author

Charles Bukowski is one of America’s best-known contemporary writers of poetry and prose and, many would claim, its most influential and imitated poet. He was born in 1920 in Andernach, Germany, to an American soldier father and a German mother, and brought to the United States at the age of two. He was raised in Los Angeles and lived there for over fifty years. He died in San Pedro, California, on March 9, 1994, at the age of seventy-three, shortly after completing his last novel, Pulp.

Abel Debritto, a former Fulbright scholar and current Marie Curie fellow, works in the digital humanities. He is the author of Charles Bukowski, King of the Underground, and the editor of the Bukowski collections On Writing, On Cats, and On Love.

So finally I've found poetry.

I never thought I'd give five stars to a book of poems. I don't dig poetry very much. I can read 150 poems and maybe like and relate to one or two of them a little bit. This is something very different. I've gone through less than half of this book but close to half, maybe over 100 poems and maybe 4 of them didn't floor me. I've always wanted to "get" poetry and finally I can say I dig/get it, but just this one guy can talk to me about the hell I see every time I open my eyes and force my feet to the floor and know I have to face another day of the ugly reality called humanity or kill myself (that takes guts) I've taken a lot of solace here in this book of poems and I know as long as I'm still here I'll be reading this again and again. I'm going to buy all his other books of poems now. Then I'll have a future of sorts.

Been wanting to read Bulowski for a while now. This seems to be a good intro to his poetry. Quick read. Recommend reading it at least twice. First to discover his voice. Next time, mark or highlight your favorites. Found some poems that I really did enjoy. Others were far from impressive. But that's how it goes, right? He is prolific though. With this book, I have grown more curious about other poetry compilations and his novels.

A huge book of poems to read at your leisure, or even just before bed. Much of Bukowski’s best work, in my opinion, came toward the later part of his life. He was older, wiser, more introspective, and you get the benefit of a vast life experience.

Often rather inconsequential thought-doodles they do sometimes feel disposable and easy. The style, you could say, is deceptively simple and conversational - Raymond Carver-like. Or just simple and conversational full stop.

Glimpses of a tough life hard lived with bored moments and weary reflections thrown in. Genuine, unadorned poems, on occasion, deeply touching, though not quite often enough.

Great Chalres Bukowski at it again! I read plenty of his novels (ham on rye, hollywood, the post office and others) whi are grittier, sometimes interwoven with slapstick and a hefty dose of sarcasm, one of his other poetry books (you get so alone at times that it just makes sense) and I did like this one as well!

The style of the poems in this collection seems a bit more 'real' and 'to the point' like pages of a diary and personal introspections rather than other types of white poetry, even in the other poetry book (you get so alone...) of C.B. I read.

Good read, definitely recommended!
