“One of the world’s best storytellers.”

—Huffington Post

For eons, the city of Troy—whose legendary fall was detailed in Homer’s Iliad—was believed to be myth, until archaeologists in the nineteenth century uncovered its ancient walls buried beneath the sands. If Troy was real, how much of Homer’s twin tales of gods and monsters, curses and miracles—The Iliad and The Odyssey—could also be true and awaiting discovery?

In the frozen tundra of Greenland, a group of modern-day researchers stumble on a shocking find: a medieval ship buried a half-mile below the ice. The ship’s hold contains a collection of artifacts—tools of war—dating back to the Bronze Age. Inside the captain’s cabin is a clockwork gold map imbedded with an intricate silver astrolabe. Once activated, the moving map traces the path of Odysseus’s famous ship as it sailed away from Troy. But the route detours as the map opens to reveal a fiery river leading to a hidden realm underneath the Mediterranean Sea—the subterranean world of Tartarus, the Greek name for Hell.

When word of Tartarus spreads, the phantasmagoric horrors found in Homer’s tales are all too real—and whoever possesses them can use their awesome power to control the future of humanity.

Now, Sigma Force must prevent a tyrant from igniting a global war and cross the very gates of Hell.

“[Rollins] is what you might end up with if you tossed Michael Crichton and Dan Brown into a particle accelerator together.”

From the Author

JAMES ROLLINS is a #1 New York Times bestselling author of international thrillers that have been translated into more than forty languages. Known for unveiling unseen worlds, scientific breakthroughs, and historical secrets, Rollins' knack for breakneck pacing and stunning originality has been hailed by critics and embraced by scores of millions of readers around the world.

The Critics Rave

The New York Times says that his "roguish charm comes from his efforts to persuade readers the story is credible [through] real-life sources for his novel's science, history and geography." Rollins' rare blend of action, suspense, and knowledge was also mentioned by the Huffington Post, which stated that "After Crichton passed away in 2008 he clearly passed the baton to James Rollins, who like Crichton, is a renaissance man."

NPR calls his work "adventurous and enormously engrossing..." and the New York Journal of Books had this to say: "If you're a fan of smart, entertaining adventure fiction, this is your summer beach read writ large....All the science, all the history, and all the locations are masterfully intertwined. The characters are multi-dimensional. And the story is, well, a corker."

The Story Teller's Story

As a boy immersed in the scientific adventures of Doc Savage, the wonders of Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, and pulps such as The Shadow, The Spider, and The Avenger, James Rollins decided he wanted to be a writer. He honed his storytelling skills early, spinning elaborate tales that were often at the heart of pranks played on his brothers and sisters.

Before he would set heroes and villains on harrowing adventures, Rollins embarked on a career in veterinary medicine, graduating from the University of Missouri and establishing a successful veterinary practice. This hands-on knowledge of medicine and science helps shape the research and scientific speculation that set James Rollins books apart.

Explosive Page-Turning Adventures

The exotic locales of James Rollins novels have emerged as a hybrid between imagination, research, and his extensive travels throughout the United States and Europe, as well as New Zealand, the South Pacific, China, Southeast Asia, Africa, Australia, and South America. Recent jaunts include book tours and stops across the country and several European nations to give talks, seminars, and media interviews. In recent years, much of James' travel has involved meeting readers in small and large groups, at writing and fan conferences, and even aboard seagoing "seminars." James' mentoring and coaching skills have made him a sought after writing instructor and guest speaker for workshops, symposia, conventions, and other forums throughout the country.

James Rollins is the author of nine thrillers in the bestselling Sigma Force series (Sandstorm, Map of Bones, Black Order, The Judas Strain, The Last Oracle, The Doomsday Key, The Devil Colony, Bloodline, and The Eye of God); six individual adventure thrillers; and the Jake Ransom middle grade series (Jake Ransom and the Skull King's Shadow, Jake Ransom and the Howling Sphinx.)

Sigma Force is forced to embark on a dangerous journey in order to save the world in this exciting and twisty new adventure by James Rollins. For centuries, the legendary city of Troy was a myth until its walls were uncovered in the nineteenth century. Now Homer’s twin tales of monsters, myths and more in the Iliad and The Odyssey are up for question. What is myth and what is fact?

When an archeology find in Greenland glacier is discovered with artifacts from the Bronze age, questions arise even as danger mounts. In the captain quarters is a map and a globe made by the famous Banu Musa Brothers that trace the journey of Odysseus and the hidden realm of the titans in Tartarus. Now as Sigma is drawn into the race against tyrants and more as the word of its weapons and more gets out. Now Sigma must take the famed journey and enter the gates of hell in order to stop a global war a tyrant is determined to provoke.

Wow is all I can say after devouring this wonderful action-packed ride that James Rollins creates in THE LAST ODYSSEY. Filled with science marvels, historical gems and a threat to contemporary day world, the author creates a story that will leave you on the edge of your seat till the very last page is read. I love this author’s books as he weaves a story filled with historical facts and myths, science marvels and more that somehow work in his Sigma Force series and add in colorful and yet complex characters, well, lets just say, get ready for a wild ride each and every time you pick up one of this author’s books. Filled with twists and turns, this story flows smoothly, delivering you on a journey that may or may not be true in real life and you can’t help but be drawn into the world he has created as you fly alongside these amazing characters as they race against the clock to stop destruction yet again.

THE LAST ODYSSEY is full of amazing characters and being the fifteenth book, I can honestly say this author tops his last release spectacularly. Some Easter eggs are thrown in that will shock you to the core and I flipped the pages eager to see where this author’s story ill take you next. I have my favorites within the Sigma Force characters and I couldn’t help but gasp is few times as they got in one adventure after another. Ad in some new characters to help things along, well you got the makings for a wild, action packed ride that will leave you breathless till the end.

THE LAST ODYSSEY is a wild ride and one you can not put down. So, strap in, get ready for an adventure of a lifetime and enter the gates of Hell with the Sigma team. Just don’t forget to breath along the way as you get caught up in the adventures and twists of the story. I can not wait to see where this author goes next because each time, I think he can’t top himself; he succeeds beyond my wildest imagination.

I have to admit that the first half of this book was better than the last half. Not that it is a bad book, far from it in fact, just that it get a bit surreal. I also kept thinking that it would make one hell of a movie. The special effects alone would be worth the price of admission. Anyway, on to the good stuff.
The Sigma Force gets tasked with finding a mysterious lost city in the Mediterranean Sea region after an ancient ship is discovered inside a glacier in Greenland containing tantalizing clues to the existence of a mythological civilization that invaded the Mediterranean area and brought about the Greek Dark Ages. Why is this important to Sigma Force? Because another group is also seeking this lost city and not for humanitarian reasons. It's up to Sigma to stop them.
There is plenty of action in this book and much of the story is based on mythology and what some experts believe are facts. This was, to me, the best part of the book. I've always felt that many of the ancient myths are based to a certain degree on historical events. Discoveries made by the characters in the book utilize some of these theories as well as some of the author's own theories. It's good stuff.

Hard to write a review without spoilers. Typical Sigma force fare. Explosions , and villains, puzzles to solve, deadlines to beat, new heroes to welcome into the family. Generally a heady combination of myth, science, and technology. Artfully done, Rollins does not disappoint. What keeps this installation a 4? I am disappointed that Painter, Monk, and Kat, have morphed into worried bureaucrats, or worse yet seemingly headed for early retirement. I like Grey and Seichan as much as the next guy, but knowing I'm expressing an unpopular viewpoint, I wouldn't mind them sitting one out to bring my favorite characters back into action ( other than making phone calls and sending supplies and gasp baby sitting!) Kowalski remains a favorite - I would appreciate him being seen as having his own unique and necessary skill set, as opposed to only muscle and wisecracks, how many times can he be glared at or hushed? Anyway, still a good and enjoyable read.

The basis of this book, Homer’s Odyssey is an awesome book of myth and wonder and this story take the surrounding tales and works and develops a really enjoyable adventure. JR is a master of the art of turning the ancient into a modern threat. It always makes me want to read the source material, just to check it’s not actually likely!!!! Love the Sigma series, can’t get enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars I found this disappointing
Reviewed in Italy on May 12, 2021
I bought this book on the back of The Last Oracle, which I enjoyed very much - both for the historical background and the story itself. This one, from what I could see, also had a fascinating historical basis. Unfortunately for me, I found the story line very poor, considering mostly of it was the Sigma man Grey being a superhero, telling people what to do even when they would have known perfectly well themselves. And then every time they went anywhere they were being shot at by the daughters of Musa and Musa himself, which got *really* tedious. The ending was forced and highly unlikely, and the whole book seemed to me as if Rollins was writing with an eye to a blockbuster film. If so, it would have been mostly cgi, and even then would have ended up a 'b' grade movie with sound and fury fx and not much else. I won't bother with any more of Rollins' books, interesting as his research is.
