The guy was looking for some closure and hoped that he could find it. He was probably not too concerned about how the consequences of his actions would affect his retirement plans.
As for his televised statements... Totally Brilliant! Of course no one believed that he meant what he was saying. He wasn't betraying his beliefs, he was making a mockery of North Korean Intelligence, while simultaneously making a mockery of the North Korean... ummm... "Intelligence."
I mean... seriously... that English grammar that they "forced" him to read? They didn't force the guy to read anything. He read it happily. It makes the North Koreans look like the retarded morons that they are. Can't they afford to send EVEN ONE GUY to learn English? Not even One?
