This novel gets 2 stars from me because the idea is intriguing and there was some good action. Even so, that action is mindless and doesn't actually progress the plot.
I also have a low tolerance for characters that don't use all the resources at their disposal to get answers to their questions about themselves. I also get a little angry at authors, who seem to only portray female characters in this way, as if a male character would never hem and haw and dither about finding answers. Sorry, ppl, woman here would straight up get answers in a careful, strategic way. This female character is in a catatonic state for half this novel and straight panic for the other half when she could have grabbed the opportunity that presented itself after the kid died and told her to warn his king about the war. After witnessing Spencer's little tete-a-tete with shadow guy, she could have told her boss all about what she saw. Nope. She SITS on critical information as if she's not at all part of that world. Uber lame.

This book was fantastic! The writing was great and it flowed so well that it was easy to get lost in the story. The heroine was strong and had a good head on her shoulders. She is trying to navigate a through a new world that is new to her ever since her powers started to show up. The fighting scenes were awesome and I love the interaction with John. I am really rooting for those two. So far there is no romance in this book but hopefully she picks John as her King.
****End*** I know...not much of spoilers
Ms. Bell is a new author to me and I haven't read any of her other books but I have already purchased the second book in the series and pre-ordered the third coming out in a few days. I'm usually a big romance reader and even though this book had no romance in it, I can see there is potential for one and that is good enough for me.
