Editorial Reviews

The U.S. ballistic submarine Colorado sits 500 feet below the Indian Ocean when orders come in to fire nuclear missiles at Pakistan. Captain Marcus Chaplin (Andre Braugher) and XO Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) both question the legitimacy of the order and ask for confirmation, but instead receive missile fire from another U.S. submarine. Left for dead at the bottom of the ocean, the Colorado finds refuge on an exotic island. As troops come toward the island, the members of the crew must work to clear their names and find out who is involved in a conspiracy of nuclear proportions. From creators Karl Gajdusek (Oblivion) and Shawn Ryan (TV’s “The Shield”), LAST RESORT – THE COMPLETE SERIES is a critically-acclaimed drama filled with action and suspense.

I just saw the last episode of this series just a few minutes ago. I am hoping the DVD is coming out soon. It is too good for TV. This series in a way is like the mini series of old. I watched all the previous episodes on demand today. It was amazing ride

Andre Braugher is amazing as Marcus Chaplin, the captain of the nuclear submarine Colorado. He and his second in command Sam Kendal (Scott Speedman) are told to do a nuclear strike from an unsecured line. When asking for repeat conformation, his sub is fired on by another US submarine. It has overtones of Fail Safe with all the political intrigue. The tensions is high & powerful. It does not let up until the final episode...and still there is air of mystery at the end. You wonder who is a friend and who is a traitor, both in the crew of the Colorado and in Washington DC.

The supporting cast including Daisy Betts, Robert Patrick, Jessy Schram and Sahr Ngaujah who adds to this piece so well. It is not a star vehicle for any actor. It is a character study drawn over 13 episodes. There are no weak performances

In a way, I am glad this show lasted only 13 episodes, it was complete. Loose ends were tightly tighten and it works. I do not think this show should have gone further than this 13 episode arc...it began and ended! It is filling and leaves you wanting more..isnt that would a good series is all about.

I will say this, this show is better than Missing: The Complete First Season ever was

Years ago I would have thought this storyline was preposterous. However, today it seems like this could actually happen. I thank the writers of this show for having the guts to feature a commanding officer who is willing to do more than follow orders. It is the responsibility of the officers to follow orders, but to also think first to determine if their orders are coming from an authorized source and if they are indeed in the best interest of America, and not just the agenda of misguided leadership. Great show!

From creators Shawn Ryan ("The Shield", "Welcome to Hollywood", "The Unit") and Karl Gajdusek ("Oblivion", "Trespass") comes "Last Resort", an American military drama which aired on ABC from September 2012 to January 2013.

The series would star Andre Braugher ("Homicide: Life on the Street", "The Mist", "City of Angels"), Scott Speedman ("Underworld" films, "Felicity"), Australian actress Daisy Betts ("Shutter", "Caught Inside", "Persons Unknown"), French actress Camille De Pazzis ("Le Premier Jour: Du Reste De Ta Vie", Quand j'etais chanteur"), Dichen Lachman ("Dollhouse", "Neighbours", "Aquamarine"), Daniel Lissing ("Crownies"), Sahr Ngaujah ("The Signal", "Stomp the Yard"), Autumn Reeser ("The Girl Next Door", "The O.C.", "No Ordinary Family"), Jessy Schram ("Unstoppable", "American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile") and Robert Patrick ("Terminator 2″, "The Unit", "Walk the Line").

While the premiere of "Last Resort" brought in over 9 million viewers, due to drop in viewership, ABC decided not to take on a full season but did air the 13 episodes that were created, including a season finale which would give fans closure.

And now "Last Resort: The Complete Series" will be released on DVD courtesy of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

"Last Resort" revolves around the crew of the U.S. Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, the USS Colorado. The crew led by Commanding Officer Marcus Chaplin (portrayed by Andre Braugher) and Lt. Commander Sam Kendal (portrayed by Scott Speedman) pick up a U.S. Navy SEAL team off Pakistan's coast.

While everything is going perfectly fine inside the USS Colorado, Lt. Grace Shepard (portrayed by Daisy Betts) receives an encoded message to launch nuclear ballistic missiles at Pakistan.

First, a confession: I adore Andre Braugher, no matter what show he's in. That's why I bought the series to begin with. And Braugher does not disappoint in Last Resort. He portrays the tough, principled Captain Chaplin to perfection, including his emotional side. He is also supported by a strong cast.
The tense action in the series is suited to a binge viewing -- you can't wait to see what happens next. Admittedly, you have to suspend judgment to believe that the captain of a nuclear sub could hold the USA hostage, but his cause is just and the way everything plays out is highly entertaining. I would recommend the series to anyone.

Enough has been said already about the plot, script, acting, etc...

All I have to say is I am looking forward to this being available on DVD and lamenting its short life span thanks to the mindless drones who control network TV. Far too many shows have been cancelled way too quickly instead of tweeking little things like scripts, time slots, etc... This same thing keeps happening usually on NETWORK TV. Anyone remember Jericho? Great show and execution and really drove home the concept that big unregulared corporations having the ability to unleash horrible destruction if they own enough of our elected officials (anyone remember what a great job Halliburtan did in Iraq or rebuilding New Orleans?)

Enough with lamenting about the slow death of network TV. This is an example of why the big three networks keep losing viewership year after year. I can count the number of shows I am following on the traditional networks on 1 hand. The rest are on the "cable" networks (Syfy, TBS, AMC, etc...). This is a show that should have been picked up by a speciality network. Remember the big 3 turned down the Walking Dead. Thankfully the smaller networks have more intelligence than the big three do.

From what I hear, the big networks continue to own the rights to these cancelled shows and are traditionally greedy when it comes to selling those rights. Same holds true for the big movie studios (ever wonder who no one has made a cell phone that looks like the original Star Trek communicator? Just ask Paramount why not).

Buy this and add to your collection (it will be in the same section as Jericho, the Day After, Testiment, Threads, etc.. in my own collection). It will be fun to pull out and watch every few years and see how relevent it is as American society and politics as we continue on our downward spiral.
