Last Summer: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 6,121 ratings

An Amazon Charts and Washington Post bestseller.

A novel of love, lies, and deceit from the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Everything series.

Lifestyle journalist Ella Skye remembers every celebrity she interviewed, every politician she charmed between the sheets, and every socialite who eyed her with envy. The chance meeting with her husband, Damien; their rapid free fall into love; and their low-key, intimate wedding are all locked in her memory. But what she can’t remember is the tragic car accident that ripped her unborn child from her. Ella can’t even recall being pregnant.

Hoping to find the memories of a lost pregnancy that’s left her husband devastated and their home empty, Ella begins delving into her past when she’s assigned an exclusive story about Nathan Donovan, a retired celebrity adventurer who seems to know more about her than she does him. To unravel the mystery of her selective memory loss, Ella follows Nathan from the snowcapped Sierra Nevada to the frozen slopes of southeast Alaska. There she discovers the people she trusts most aren’t the only ones keeping secrets from her—she’s hiding them from herself. Ella quickly learns that some truths are best left forgotten.

The perfect summer read

The perfect summer read
This one does not mess around. The intrigue is there from moment one, and it does not let go. At all. Twist after twist after twist, and I am here for it. Honestly, it’s a bit steamier than I usually go for, but it totally works for the character, who just kept getting more and more complex as the story went along. And at the end—which is bonkers, BTW—I found myself debating with myself about what I’d do. I’m not so sure I wouldn’t do what Ella did. And I’ll just leave it at that ;)

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars!

I received the ARC of this book and pre-purchased a copy. I have read all of Kerry Lonsdale’s books and I think she is a gifted, wonderful author. This book is another gem to add to her collection.

As I was reading the book, I thought I had the plot of the book figured out (turned out to be not true!). That was okay to me, since I usually am in this position to guess the outcome when I read the types of books that I do (Women’s Fiction, Romance). I was still completed interested in the book and it was definitely a page-turner. When I was not reading, this book was always on my mind. Now after finishing it, this book remains on my mind and I imagine it will be for a long time. I wrote a few notes to myself about half the way in the read to remind me of my feelings. It is odd to look back at them now, after completing the book, I was so wrong!

Ella Skye, a Senior Features Writer with Luxe Avenue magazine, is trying to replace her lost memories after being in a car accident resulting in the loss her unborn child and waking up in the hospital. The oddest thing is that the selective memory lost comes 5 days after the accident. She cannot remember anything about her pregnancy, and other things related to that time. Her journalist skills take over and this is a mystery that she needs to solve. Ella deduces that two people are the link to her memory loss, her husband, Damien and the person she interviewed last summer, Nathan Donovan. Unfortunately, Damien (the founder and CEO of a private global cybersecurity firm) will not be open and talk to her about the missing memories, is being distant, depressed and angry. Nathan is an outdoor adventurist and TV celebrity. He wants Ella to get to know him again, before telling her what happened between them.

The old saying that you do not know what goes on behind closed doors, kept running through my mind while reading the early part of this book. While on the surface, Ella and Damien seem to have a terrific marriage with no financial cares, take care of their bodies and are physically active, enjoy each other’s company, have a terrific sex life and both have professions they are driven to perform, it still seemed things between them were not so perfect. The fact that Damien was not very sympathetic to Ella after her car accident, death of their unborn child and her selective memory loss spoke so much to me about their relationship.

I do not want to say more about the plot; even what I wrote is too much. I think the book should be read because it is fantastic and not knowing too much about the plot is a good thing.

Kerry Lonsdale has created well-developed characters that are so complex. I thought I knew them and then as the book progressed, I find out I did not know them at all! The plot is excellent. I went through so many different emotions as the story unfolded. I was immersed from the start and was pulled deeper and deeper into story as I read. I was blown away by this book and I know I will be rereading it, which is something I rarely do

Review Linda's Book Obsession Reviews "Last Summer" by @Kerry Lonsdale, Lake Union Publishing, July 2019

Kerry Lonsdale, "Last Summer" has written an intense, intriguing, and captivating novel. The Genres for this Novel are Fiction, Suspense, Psychological Thriller, and Romance. The timeline for this story is mostly in the present and goes back to the past when it pertains to the characters or events in the story. There are twists and turns, betrayals and lies. The author describes her characters as complex and complicated.

Is there anything at all in your life you would willingly forget if you could? Ella Skye is a journalist, who seems to have selective memory loss. Ella remembers her husband Damien, but she can't remember significant and important things after her accident. Ella tries to solve this mystery by herself, and she has no idea what will change lives forever. I would recommend this page-turning novel for readers who enjoy a thought-provoking, and intense novel. (less)

The premise of the book was interesting and different which kept me turning pages excited to see where the author was going. I didn't care much for the heroine of the book, but then I don't think I was supposed to. She was great at passing blame and wasn't opposed to being manipulative or promiscuous to get a story. But it did make it difficult to grasp where the devotion from the male characters came from. Ella's memory loss journey was interesting, but I hoped it would lead to some self awakening and realization of her mistakes. Instead it ends with two manipulative people who take advantage of another person (a man struggling with the loss of a child) in a terrible, terrible way. I understand that was the point of the story, but it was all handled to simplistically in my opinion. It's as if the author used up all her creativity before she made it to the end of the story. The reasons Damien was estranged from his parents weren't plausible and certainly not something you'd keep from your spouse. Also, he forgave his wife way too easily for cheating, even if he did orchestrate the whole thing. Better writing at the end of the book would have made this 5 stars. I didn't need a happily ever after, but I did need plausible explanations and a deeper dive into the characters thoughts, justifications, and consequences.

The story starts with Ella Sky waking up in a hospital bed and not remembering how she got there. She’s forgotten the last nine months of her life, including her unborn child.

Ella wants to remember. She mourns the loss of her memories. As a journalist she needs to find out what happened, what caused her memory loss. Her husband, Damien, mourns the loss of their son but also seems distant.

Ella is actually a likable character. I didn’t want to like her but I did. I actually thought her relationship with Nathan was more real than her relationship with her husband; and that’s before I knew the whole story. What is selective memory loss? Is it really possible to forget memories on purpose?

My one complaint about the majority of Kerry Longsdale stories is they are continuation stories. I love when I feel like I didn’t get enough of a story but I don’t want to feel like I have to read the next book. I want to feel like I want to read the next book.

Well I didn't see that ending coming! An excellent tale of misplaced trust, guilt, secrets and lies, with brilliantly fleshed-out characters that felt real, raw, vulnerable and oh-so-human. Off to get myself all of Kerry Lonsdale's other books now as she claims a spot on my favourite author list!

Another well written book by Kerry Lonsdale.
Intriguing characters and storyline
Ella wakes in hospital following and accident and subsequent loss of her baby with no memory of her pregnancy or the time leading up to it.
What is causing her memory loss?
This book tells Ella’s story as she struggles to come to terms with the loss of her baby and her memory. What lies behind the memory loss? Are there secrets to be found, will she find all the answers and if so what will happen next?
