Gameplay

The Last of Us is a third-person Survival-Action game that utilizes choices in gameplay action to develop the game storyline, as well as the relationship between the two main characters, Joel and Ellie. The game features a combination of combat, exploration, stealth and platforming game mechanics. Although Joel and Ellie are both residents of a post-apocalyptic world, they have had different experiences that affect the way they see the world around them, and feel about what they see and do. Joel had a life before the pandemic, while the world of the pandemic is all that Ellie has ever known. As part of Joel's job to smuggle Ellie out of the quarantine zone, players have to make choices in how they deal with enemies, which include, roving gangs of human scavengers not unlike themselves, military elements and infected civilians. Player also have opportunity to together interact with elements of the world around them, which helps to build the bond between Joel and Ellie. Resources in the game are scarce, making overwhelming use of firepower unlikely and unwise in conflicts, and resource gathering missions. In addition, most other residents of the ruined world that are encountered are just trying to survive - blurring the line between good guys and bad guys. Finally, game AI react differently depending on the specifics of the player's actions, making choice in gameplay a major consideration.

If you as the reader are still trying to figure out what this game is about then there are countless other reviews to read. Here I decided to highlight the most decisive factor for me when I purchased the game: its cost.
As many titles tend to do now, there is a slew of DLC for this game. Getting the Season Pass gives one instant access, no hidden costs, to all of the fifty-or-so multiplayer items, most of which are hats and masks costing ninety-nine cents each. However, keep in mind this does include the "Abandoned Territories Map Pack" and the upcoming "Left Behind" chapter, which costs fifteen dollars by itself while the pass is twenty! After downloading, I honestly asked myself, "why is the 'Left Behind' pre-order unavailable now?" Duh! "I've all ready paid for it with the Season Pass."
This is my first Amazon digital purchase and while it may not offer some of the benefits from PSN or other vendors, the money I saved on this gift to myself (paid $54.98 on Xmas Day 2013) has not presented any serious problems thus far. Happy gaming!

My previous favorite games were Uncharted 1, 2 and 3. The Last Of Us takes the action of those games and adds an epic storyline and even more advanced graphics, scenery and mo-cap. I haven't finished it yet but it's far more compelling than any movie I've seen and easily the best game I've ever played. The main thing Uncharted had over this is the humor & wit, but with a post-apocalyptic backdrop I wouldn't expect much humor.

So first impressions was the graphics which made me kind of cringe in a way, because excellent graphics usually means that the game is going to be short lived in most cases, however this surprised me with the challenge level and the graphics at a level when resident evil 2 first came out on the original playstation, sure it's not as scary but it game me the same feeling of satisfying gun play, however being out of that generation and wanting a challenge it didn't disappoint, with limited ammo and a crafting system to boot this game was something i've always wanted in a survival horror and more, the puzzles were at least better than resident evil 5 which was a poor excuse for a resident evil game. This game involves humans as well as undead, of different difficulty levels. I did find a few glitches with the human a.i. at the start with a guy running into the wall attempting to pathfind me but this would probably be fixed in a patch by the time this review is read. It is one of the best survival horror games I have played in a while, up there with left 4 dead 2, resident evil 2, resident evil 4 and silent hill. While I can't think of many reasons not to buy this game, I guess being a little linear might be an issue for some but, I mean resident evil is mostly linear as well, but there is variety in how you can take down enemies with a stealth or with guns blazing. I did find it fun to stealth kill zombies and humans alike, this game has a really interesting story too, whoever wrote this was a genius, it's a very fresh perspective and different enough to justify a purchase.Read more ›

This is by far an amazing game, one the best I've played all year. The graphics, the characters, the story and the gameplay all mesh splendidly. I found myself getting attached to the characters during the story but also had fun derping around with the characters during gameplay to experience both serious gameplay and silliness. The environments you're put through are very pretty and challenging. Just like in a real post-apocalyptic setting, you have to scavenge in order to succeed, of course if you neglect this aspect of the game and just play through, you're going to hit some rough patches. In my opinion, it's crucial to your survival to scavenge the maps and find all the hidden treasures buried about to help further your skills and crafting. You are also challenged to think outside the box or to be stealthy at times as well as full on combat which has a nice mixture to keep things interesting. Of course not all is perfect in The Last of Us, like most games, it has its drawbacks with NPCs at times. Occasionally your partner in crime will obnoxiously get in your way and will take a moment to move them out of the way or they'll be in clear line of sight to enemy NPCs and go unnoticed (really?) whereas if it was you in their position, they'd be alerted and start attacking and calling for reinforcements if available. Or when stealth killing with multiple enemies within close proximity and you manage to stealth kill one, their NPC pal only a few feet away continues on as business as usual like they couldn't hear their partner getting taken down, which is a good thing in your case but, would have been better and more challenging otherwise. Overall, The Last of Us is a very beautiful and challenging game. I've since beaten the game on Normal (still very challenging despite being a 'normal' or 'medium' difficulty) and more than willing to come back for seconds and thirds with this game for the New Game+ achievements and higher difficulties and challenges. A definite buy for sure!
