Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

El Nuevo Constante was driven aground off the Louisiana coast during a hurricane in 1766. The ship's cargo consisted of mercury, copper ingots, dye stuffs, pottery, and other trade goods-not tons of silver or gold. Noted historian Hoffman (history, Louisiana State Univ.) and Pearson, a meticulous archaeologist, thoroughly document the history of the vessel. The authors fully describe the physical features of the wreck and surmise how the hull was constructed, where and how the various cargoes were stowed, and even where the goods originated. Moreover, the authors are particularly adept at explaining the methods used to prepare the trade goods: e.g., how cochineal is made and how storage containers are constructed for mercury. Many books chronicle the discovery of treasure-laden Spanish shipwrecks in the Gulf of Mexico, but this is the first that thoroughly documents the salvage of an ordinary merchant ship. For public libraries.

From Booklist

Just one of a fleet of ships, El Nuevo Constante set sail on its final voyage during hurricane season in August 1766. This richly detailed account presents underlying research, as well as archaeological data resulting from a study of the wreck of the ship, which was found off the coast of southwestern Louisiana. Replete with historical details, the book re-creates the eighteenth-century atmosphere of shipbuilding and vibrant activity of Spanish trade with America. Everything from the ship's bill of sale to information obtained from a list of its cargo will be found described here, along with technical aspects of the salvage operations and, perhaps even more interesting, a recounting of the artifacts retrieved.
