I have just completed the six books in the first two-thirds of Michael Hicks's "In Her Name" series. Although I have a couple of the single editions, I am basing these comments on the two omnibus editions: "The Last War" and "Redemption". "The Last War" consists of "First Contact", "Legend of the Sword", and "Dead Soul". "Redemption" consists of "Empire", Confederation", and "Final Battle".

I love the fact that just about anyone can publish an ebook these days. Anyone with a story to tell has the opportunity to get it out there for the general public to read. As an avid reader, I have come across some very intelligent and well thought out tales! I have also come across some terrible ones. The problems come in when the writer lacks either the talent or the discipline to tell the tale coherently and in a way that captivates the reader. Some of the stories I have come across recently were interesting but written so poorly that getting through the initial novel was a chore...and you can imagine how much I wanted to continue following the story after such an experience. One of the current ways authors get new readers is to give the first novel in a series away for free. I will usually pick up any free book offered and read them once I get around to it. Such was the case with Mr Hicks's "First Contact" and "Empire". I had downloaded both and they had been sitting around waiting for me to get to them for months...I am kind of sorry I waited so long.

OK, before I go any further, let me state upfront that these books are a good read and well worth the very reasonable price being asked for them. Out of five stars, I give them a solid four. With that said, there are some flaws that (armchair QuarterBack that I am) I will point out.

Michael Hicks is one of the many excellent authors I have "discovered" through the magic of my Kindle. This trilogy was well written, fast moving and marvelously creative. I especially like Hicks' use of portraying key events through
different character's perspective. I am anxious to start his Empire Trilogy and I hope it is as entertaining and thought provoking as "The Last War". I proclaim this book a "Value Read". You will not be disappointed.

I like how the author kept the aliens mysterious, giving just enough information to flesh them out. This kept the focus on the human side of the war and how we humans may react to something we just don't understand. In most stories of human versus alien most authors attribute human emotions or motivations to aliens. While some of that was done here it was mostly something we just couldn't understand.

Normally I'm not a big fan of a "prequel" type series but this one kicked some major butt. I read First Contact before coming across this collection of all 3 books together and at first I was a little disappointed about the extra money I had already spent but let me just say it was well worth it and then some. It was nice to get some background on the war between the Kreela and mankind and I found myself spending hours at a time absorbing every word on the page. The books were full of characters that were easy to care about and I often found myself on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.

I highly recommend this series as well as the first series which picks up after this one. Good stuff, you won't be disappointed!

This was one of the finest science fiction series I have read and can't wait to read the next trilogy "Redemption". Michael Hicks books are filled with so much drama, suspense, and emotions that there is no way to keep from being totally immersed in the evolving story which makes you feel that you are really a part of the action. Keep on writing Michael and I will be sure to follow you by reading all of your books you are a great Sci-Fi author.

This book is a great read. Will keep you going to the end. I would recommend reading this before reading the Empire trilogy, just for a time sense and mystery. The characters are well established and everything has enough believability and background info to keep the readers interested.

As luck would have it, I stared out reading the first book in the series "First Contact" because it was free and what luck it was!

This is a fantastic Alien culture that had me captivated! The human side was somewhat without much mystery or interest to me, mainly because the human side I already know and whether its a thousand years from now or a thousand years ago, human nature does not change only the instrument's we use.

So, this series (three books, In Her Name:The Last War) was action packed with much more from the human side than the Aliens (although there is plenty of the Alien side as well giving you a glimpse of what it is they are doing and why), since I'm not much into long "military action" descriptions/set ups, I skimmed those parts but I'm sure there are fans who enjoy those part (and some dont, to each his own).

I like books with emotion/characters and plot/mystery and this has it in spades (full), the writing is excellent and kept me turning the pages.
I have just finished the first book in the second trilogy (In her name: Redemption), which I believe was originally written first and all I can say is WOW!
Don't let this entire three set trilogy, six books soon to be nine I hope (Last War and Redemption and the third series just has one book published so far, In Her Name: First Empress) and go by without reading
I know there are detractors (I don't like books that others gave 5 Stars to also) but as I said to each his own, I love this Author (so far) he is going on my watch list
