Review
This book is a brilliant account of the final year for the Kriegsmarine. It is the story of a doomed generation of sailors who bravely and hopelessly went to battle knowing that theirs was a hopeless cause. Tarrant (as usual) provides an interseting text, and keeps the book moving along. He gives you a good impression of the overwhelming force deployed by the Allies at the end of the Second World War. --By Michael Knight
what a book. read this and the other two books in the trilogy and you find it easy to understand how germany lost the war --By robert michael lowe

potentially game-changing weapons (electric U-boats, for example) in development, but largely ran out of time to field them. This book gives an outstanding overview of the doomed last year of the Kriegsmarine. Highly recommended to military historians of the second world war at sea. Five stars.
For example, he gives an exceptional account of the activities of the minor surface units the German navy had in the Mediterranean.
I wish he would write such detail on the other years of the war. I would gladly buy those books and read them right away.
