I just finished reading your incredible book! It was late when I downloaded it, bleary-eyed and tired, I resolved to read it the morning. However, after perusing a few pages, I couldn't put it down! WOW! Double WOW!
I was so touched by your personal journey. The depth of your love and devotion for your son defies description. I found myself unable to hold back the tears. The laughter. Admiration and awe for your incredible talent. Profound respect for your genius. And on a deeper... more personal level...distinct discomfort and remorse for not being more aware of what is really going on in our Juvenile Justice System and in the lives of families like yours. You truly put a face on the problems.
Your "Before Probation," and "During Probation," slice of life Daily Routines were jarring to say the least! Thought provoking. I also found it striking that the solutions you suggested for identifying and dealing with young lives spiraling out of control are offered in plain English, rather than in a bunch of intellectual mumbo jumbo.
I also think that you are a brilliant researcher! You should be teaching at some University somewhere. Working on your PH.D. You are a brain-i-ac..."Dr. Shaw!!!" After reading this thought provoking and profound offering, (which led me to dig into one of your earlier books,) I can't say enough about how much you have to offer to the world. Especially now. Just look into the speaking engagements of other activists such as yourself (i.e.Kembra Smith,) one of the references from THIS book! I feel certain that most of those organizations would welcome you. Mother of Civil-WE-zation! The world needs you!!! Again, WOW!
Dwan Smith-Fortier Actress, Writer, Producer
Valerie Shaw is a gifted writer; she has a no-nonsense writing style that is seasoned with a breezy humorous undertone that belies the utter seriousness of her topic -- namely, how do we protect our children, how do we recognize red flags in our children's behavior, how do we intervene before it is too late for a simple time out.
Back in the 1940's and 1950's young parents were given copies of Dr. Spock's books on infant and child care. To take nothing from the great work of Dr. Spock, I believe that parents today should be given copies of Valerie Shaw's very inportant work.
