Panned by media critics because, in their view, the lyrics are not politically correct.
Excellent songwriting and recording. My favorites are Psychoanalysts' Ball, Thank God For The Blues, A Few Bars Early, Double Agent, Up County Down, Duper's Delight, They Own The Media and Why Are You On Facebook? If you are a fan of Van's you will love it. Ignore the critics.

Great album. Better than his last album. Typical Van Morrison, some complaining, that's nothing new, the blues songs are the strongest parts of the whole album, and are very good. Very good musicians all around. Only wish it had autoripped like all his other albums have in the past. Highly recommended album. Over 2 hours of music. Can't wait for Volume 2.

Latest Record Project Vol. 1 is a superb album that is often danceable, satirical, and full of pointed perceptions. I've listened to it twice today, not only because Van cannot be beaten but because, as a totality, it is a tonic for today's prevailing political and behavioral circumstances. Van's vocals and sax solos are amazing. The band and backup singers are great, especially the organ, and the variety of styles and arrangements are compelling. Particular praise goes to "Where Have All The Rebels Gone," which rocks like crazy! Forget about all the media reviews that emphasize the old trope that Van is a curmudgeon. That does not matter. The truth is that this is a great album.

The negative reactions of some reviewers reveal that we are indeed in the era of music being merely heard rather than actually listened to. There IS a difference! We're also in the age of demanding immediate gratification, which is about all that current "artists" aspire to providing. I admit that this album did not grab me entirely on first playing, but it's been my experience that music which is highly appealing on first spin usually has less to offer on subsequent plays. While this offering is not in the same league as "Astral Weeks," "Moondance," or "Too Long in Exile" (a generally overlooked masterwork), there is much on these two discs to enjoy and admire. Van the Man has earned the right to do whatever he feels like doing, and it's more rewarding to discover where he's at than demanding he remain wherever it is some fans feel he ought to be. Anyone truly familiar with him is aware that he detests crap, and is incapable of delivering it. He is an artist first, an entertainer second. If you can't find any value in his latest journey, your musical appreciation skills may not be as developed as you believe.

I got hooked on Van around 1990 and have seen him perform probably 150 times. The first track I heard from this was a YouTube of the title song, Latest Record Project. To put it mildly, I was underwhelmed. I've always loved it when Van goes into a repetition and it becomes like a mantra, but this seemed like parody. Flash ahead to buying the record and, as with other recent releases, it got better and better with each listen. The voice is in terrific shape for a 75-year-old, capable of barking or crooning or warbling at will. His saxophone playing remains as expressive as ever. He has surrounded himself with excellent musicians, like guitarist Dave Keary, and the songs run from ballads to blues to up-tempo pop-flavored.
Van has a long history of grievance songs. I've always loved that while the vast majority of his work is life-affirming and heartfelt, there's been a space carved out for darker themes. You can go back to A Town Called Paradise (1986) with the lyric "copycats ripped off my songs," or Drumshanbo Hustle from the 70s, where he sings about "puking up your guts when you read the standard contract you just signed." In one show I saw in Northern Ireland, he went into a rant between songs about someone who had cleaned out his bank account 40 years earlier. So this is nothing new. I've never tried to parse the lyrics too closely; Van is more of an impressionist than a photorealist. Listen repeatedly and I suspect you will get into this one.
If his livestream performance of several of these songs on May 8 is any indication, the new record will provide fodder for some extended live workouts of these numbers when show dates resume. I for one am looking forward to seeing Van the Man onstage again.

Was always a mild admirer of VM and had a couple of his more popular releases. While those were fancy Warner Bros. recordings the production quality of this album surpass it. Van's voice is the same as when he did Moondance and the instrumentals all play familiar kind of like a Willy Nelson album. As for the lyrics which back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's would get applause in today's fully homogenized world apparently they are uniformly absent, so for that kudo's to VM for just carrying on the tradition that musicians and comedians once had before just recently. It's a great album you can put on and play in the background and it adds atmosphere much like a fireplace in a snowy December.

Van Morrison | Latest Record Project Vol. 1 (Deluxe) | 07.05.21 | Mit AutoRip
Passend hierzu der Song THANK GOD FOR THE BLUES.
THREE CHORDS AND THE TRUTH.

“No, assolutamente, è sempre quello!” mi ha risposto.
All’interno, tutti i testi e tutti i musicisti presenti, canzone per canzone.
Molto apprezzata, comunque, la quasi parodia testuale di Where Have All The Flowers Gone? che qui diventa Where Have All The Rebels Gone? …hiding behind computer screens.

Reviewed in Italy on May 8, 2021Verified Purchase

Van keeps regurgitating the same old stuff!
Reviewed in Canada on May 26, 2021Verified Purchase
Nothing new or very interesting on Van's new "Proiject:"! He keeps mining the tired old blues and pop tunes that gained him an audience in the 70's. "Astral Weeks", "Moondance", "Veedon Fleece", "Wavelength" were all masterpieces of great lyricism and music. Van excels with introspective lyrical songs but falls very flat with his recycling of blues and jazzy tunes. His last 8 albums have been "run of the mill". Come on Van, dig deeper! Stop pumping out the same old stuff!.
