Ignore the critics - ignore the negative reviews. If you are a Van Morrison fan, you will love this collection of songs. In an era of "cancel culture" they want you to believe that Van Morrison has crossed over into conspiracy land. I am old enough to remember a time when criticizing our leaders was a good thing. I guess it only depends on which side is doing the criticizing. This is an artist who is not afraid to speak out against what is happening to our culture. Whether it is the corporate media, social media, or just criticizing those who bitch anonymously behind a computer screen, Van covers it all. After a long period of reflection during lockdown we have a solid collection of songs. Not all 28 are masterpieces, but as a whole this is his best collective effort since the Healing Game. The blues tracks are the standout ones for sure!

I bought the vinyl and the packaging is great. The gatefold collection comes with a book with the lyrics.
This is the only artist out there who at age 75 is putting out music pretty much on an annual basis.
I hope there is a volume 2.

I would have given this 5 stars because it seems Van is the last real Rebel - but it does not have the impact of some of the other Van records that I would give 5 stars (Wavelength) - but this will satisfy any fan. He could have left the first track on the cutting floor and put "No More Lockdown" in its place. It's Van, he can do whatever he wants. It is also nice to hear well-recorded music without having the s**t compressed out of it. No autotune here - just great Van and music.

It’s not Woke and that ain’t a bad thing

Most double albums contain their fair amount of filler. It’s the exceptions that stand out, Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde, Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, The Clash’s London Calling Stone’s Exile on Main St. Having said that, this is a solid set of 28 original songs, especially when you consider he has released 5 other albums in the last 3 1/2 years. His anti-lockdown stance has the music critics panties in a wad and their reviews of this album have been harsh based more on this then on the music itself. Much like Dylan, Morrison has opinions that sometimes run contrary to the music industry at large and is not afraid to state them. His low opinion of Social Media (Why Are You On Facebook?) and the Main Stream Media (They Own The Media) rocks their boat and has them (unfairly) crying Anti semitism and QAnon. Pathetic really.
If you are a fan of Van’s, I recommend it without reservation

The Problem Is . . .

that Van Morrison makes great-sounding albums. Really great sounding. You put on Van, and your soul will be satisfied. I know of no other artist whose albums have such depth, such breadth, such warmth. The problem is that it's easy to overlook how lackluster the material can be.

All of the songs on this album have serviceable melodies and arrangements. You play the album, and you're enveloped in that great sound. But can you remember the songs? Maybe more important: do you want to remember them?

Look at the title and cover of the current album. Could they be less attractive, interesting, meaningful? Perhaps a snub from the artist?

Van is no Bob Dylan, or Bono for that matter, when it comes to words. That's never mattered much because of his melodies, arrangements, performance, and great sound. But the lyrics of this album are either whining or wacko.

As far as I'm concerned, Van hasn't written a great song in decades. I like his Joey DeFrancesco collaborations the best, I think, because of DeFrancesco and the interplay of these two great artists. But, of the two ('You're Driving Me Crazy,' 'The Prophet Speaks'), it's the former I prefer by a good margin. The latter sounds great, like all of Van's albums do (except 'A Period of Transition'), but the former has much better songs. The songs on 'Prophet' are new.

'Latest Record Project Volume 1' is documentation that Van can come up with great-sounding albums as easily as breathing. But that doesn't mean we need to play them.

Van can remember when twelve shillings made a pound. I think this explains how he kept getting ripped off by those unscrupulous record companies in the sixties. Now that's quite funny, but this sad, shabby, reactionary excuse for an album is not funny at all. Over more than two hours of tedious supper-club level jazz and blues, Van lays out a list of complaints against women (they're too lazy to work and take your money), against the developing world (they steal the "rewards" of Western Man by doing deals behind your back - I honestly wish I was making this up), against his own fans (Jealousy and Why are you on Facebook? and many more songs).
I felt really sad after listening to this album by someone who has been a hero of mine since 1973 and who I have seen over 50 times live. I've put up with Van's tedious moans about the record business since St Dominic's Preview, knowing that I'd be rewarded with an Enlightenment, Linden Arden, Little Village, Behind The Ritual, or Dark Night of The Soul. But that open, hopeful, giving, yearning side of Van has now been smothered by his reactionary, misogynist, patriarchal sewage. Never thought my hero would turn out to be a Poundland Morrissey. And by the way Van, that Poundland had twenty shillings in it, not twelve.
And then..... you hear the voice. Most singer's voices have seriously deteriorated by the time they're in their seventies. Van's voice is actually getting better. It's as rich and strong as it was for Wavelength and Into The Music. Truly a thing of wonder....Pity about the lyrics though.

While this album has received a high number of "unfavourable" reviews in the mainstream press, these can be attributed entirely to the perceived offence caused. Over the 28 tracks, there is a wide array of styles, all underpinned by Van's impeccable voice, and by a sincerity almost non-existent among mainstream musicians nowadays. They have the familiar Van Morrison sound, but every song is distinctive and well-crafted. The sheer number of tracks mean that it does take a little longer than usual for the individual tracks, and the album as a whole, to embed itself. As long as listener neurosis doesn't get in the way, that is.

Some tunes are out-and-out catchy (Why Are You On Facebook, Love Should Come With A Warning, Western Man) and make a great first impression, whole others may take several listenings before making their mark. This is the sign of a great album.

Many have desperately tried to "interpret" this album as "mad ravings", "bigotry", or whatever. This is not the case, and simply reflects their psychology (see the track "Psychoanalyst's Ball"). He hits the lyrical mark with most of these tracks, and the hysterical reactions simply demonstrate this.

A highly enjoyable, and moreover a valuable record for times like ours.

Like Dylan he reflects his age and things that concern him. And this from someone who disagrees with his views. Give the man a break. Nice album.

You can keep all the controversy about opinions and left-right perspectives - Van is back swinging with both fists and I love this collection. Like Sage Of Staverton I hear echoes of Hymns To The Silence quality levels - although there's little here as laid-back of much of that beautiful set 30 years ago. And whereas - as KaleHawkwood points out - the Man has surely tried our patience with a few lacklustre albums in recent years, I reckon this one is a belter. Feet are tapping, fingers are clicking, the swaying has begun.

Some other day maybe I'll pay some attention to lyrics and off-line opinions, but for now Van is back, he's been on repeat play here all day, and I am loving' it! The arrangements and musicianship strike me as (back) UP a few notches. His singing - always a little lugubrious in later years - is consistently on the money here. Way to go Van. Someone had to come through with the goods.

A well-filled double cd set (3 vinyl set). This is only his second double studio album after Hymns to the Silence some years ago and like that album the songs on offer range from merely good to excellent. There are no flashes of genius here, but neither is there a duff track to be heard. Van sounds like he is cruising, but at a very high level. If you like most of his output, then this album will appeal to you. I have given four stars as I feel that five would give the impression that this album is up there with albums like Moondance and Astral Weeks, it isn't, however it is a very good album and well worth the £10 I paid for the CD version.
