The fabric is only vaguely flannel-like. Before I washed it, I was going to say it's not flannel at all, but after washing, it has the tiniest bit of fluffiness to it. The quality of the fabric is similar to so-called flannel shirts that are sold for $9.99 in supermarkets and chain drug stores.
I am a small person albeit with an hourglass shape. The medium fits me but with no room to spare. If you are large in any one dimension, you may want to size up.
I am 5' 2" and this robe barely covers my knees. I kind of like that, but if I were taller, it would be above my knees and I wouldn't like that. The belt loops are placed too high even for little ol' me. Now, I am a little long-waisted but not to where it affects how my clothes fit. I think I'm only long-waisted in relation to my short height. So the belt loops are placed for a very short-waisted person. I am going to re-sew the loops but for now I'll just use the belt not in the loops. It doesn't look too weird if I do use the belt loops, but it feels funny. The interior tie, which is a nice touch, is also placed too high.
I've been using a terry robe that is getting ratty, plus recently it just dawned on me how heavy it is, literally heavy, not just "heavyweight." I bought this flannel robe for something not so heavy on my body and it's perfect for that. I don't need extra thick or extra warm anyway..
This robe washed and dried just fine. I didn't notice any shrinkage. The fabric definitely became softer.
