Beautiful detail in these six little Buddha's. Styles vary and they will be a delight as a gift or even in your home. In china Maitreya is known as "the laughing Buddha" and is usually represented as a rotund figure with a happy disposition. His Chinese name is PU-tai ho-Shang or "hemp-bag monk". He is originally a fertility figure who was known to bring "goodies" in his bag to local townsfolk, especially children. Later, he became a pre-incarnation of Maitreya. In japan he is called hotel and is one of the seven lucky gods.

I read commentary about "cheap packaging" and how they couldn't be displayed in the package but unless you are a retailer and they're out for other folks to buy I think leaving these guys in their box would be a travesty. If they're for resale, the box was just fine for placing on a shelf. The Buddhas are meant to be out and about just apparently not in your kitchen or bathroom so don't leave them in the box!
I am very pleased with my purchase and would buy more of these in the future. They are heavy enough to know that they were in my hand... about like a stone chess piece might feel if you were holding it. I have already put my Buddhas out in my front room and they may be joined by another set, we'll see after I've cleaned that area back up.
