Product Description

1928-Silent-black and white-This is it! The forgotten Universal Horror movie written by Victor Hugo. In fact, the story line has many similarities to Hugo's The Hunchback of Notre-Dame. Conrad Veidt plays Gwynplaine, a man disfigured as a child to give him a permanent grin. Gwynplaine's look inspired the appearance of The Joker of Batman Comics. He joins a traveling carnival as a freak clown. Can he find love with the blind girl Dea (played by Mary Philbin of The Phantom Of The Opera)? Or will his life be ruined by the evil jester Barkilphedro?

You can see the Joker's beginning in movies.

You can see the Joker's beginning in movies.
It is a silent B&W from an age where there were no computer effects so it was done in more theatrical ways of expression and design. The essence of the character is there is a more stilted form of acting that what we are accustomed to today. If you are into watching light being used to create shadows (think "Sin City")and suspense.Never really noticed the music....Good? Bad?....I do not know. I see it as a history piece.

The story is brilliantly told. Germany in pre-WWII, with lots to think about and make your own conclusions. No matter the politics, it is a brilianlty acted piece with actors using there whole beings to tell the story.

The cinematograph of this film is magical and captures the imagination for a rare silent film. The story of the blind girl falling in love with a sensitive monster like character is a universal charm with a added dimension of hidden royal background and sinful temptations scattered through out film--a cinematography gem!

One of the best silent films I've ever seen, if not THE best. It's really sad, that this film is not among the ohter well known classics like Metropolis, Nosferatu, The Phantom of the Opera, just to name a view and only known by a few silent film aficionados. Conrad Veidt's protrayal of Gwynplaine is one of the best performances ever put on screen. And his make up from Jack Pierce rivals the one from Lon Chaney Sr. in The Phantom of the Opera. The direction of Paul Leni is wonderful and the story from Victor Hugo just heartbreaking. A must see for every fan of silent films.

What a tragic tale with a wonderful ending. I absolutely loved the direction. A touching and powerful movie that if you can look beyond the freak stuff, you will be moved by the debt of the story and the amazing lead actor who was the opposite of the "Joker" as everyone likes to compare. If you just see the Joker, then you need to grow up and get some debt or you will keep missing out on the really amazing things in life. Fabulous movie - how they did that in 1930 is beyond me. Two thumbs up and my dog is sitting pretty too!

To put it simply. If you care about the history of cinema dating back to the silent era, this is one movie you will not want to miss. It's a classic masterpiece that we're lucky to still have access to unlike lost classics such as London After Midnight.
