Launch Photography: Ben Cooper Photographs Rockets of NASA and More Paperback – September 15, 2019

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 77 ratings

Master launch photographer Ben Cooper captures readers’ favorite subjects in a new light. Rather than presenting the standard “rocket lifting off the launch pad” images, he provides fresh perspectives. In addition to providing text about manned and unmanned crafts that will pique the interest of shuttle enthusiasts and newcomers alike, he shares wide-angle captures, night photographs, images shot from seldom-seen angles, and more. Readers will marvel over detailed photos of the shuttle before and after retirement, and juxtaposed with nature (Cape Canaveral’s launch pages are surrounded by a national wildlife refuge), behind-the-scenes shots, images of the crafts rolling to the pad, and launching and landing too. Photographs of unmanned rockets, such as United Launch Alliance Delta II, Delta IV, and Atlas V rockets, which have been launching for a long time, plus the new era SpaceX, Falcon 9, and Falcon Heavy rockets, will please readers young and old.

About the Author

In 2003, looking to pursue a career in the space program, Ben Cooper attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL, and earned a degree in aerospace engineering in 2008. During his time there, he photographed launches. By his graduation, he had a broad portfolio in photography and offers to apply for a NASA photographer position. He was privileged to photograph the remaining space shuttle launches and their mission preparations for NASA from 2008-2011, when the aging vehicles were retired. Much of this work was critical to the lives of the astronauts onboard, as NASA implemented broad documentation requirements for photography on the ground and in space during a mission following the Columbia accident in 2003. During the same period, new companies were being established and conducting their first launches in an era some have dubbed “New Space.” Ben was quickly asked to capture the first flights of this new era.

The Art of the Launch!
Simply put, Ben’s love for the space program redefined artistic launch photography. Love my book and others at work have loved looking through it! The pages here show the results of how a teenager taking pictures from the Kennedy Center causeway turned into a passionate all-access coverage of All Things NASA. Not to mention that he’s matured into a fabulous and accomplished all-around photog; Travel, landscapes, astrophotography - he does it all! (Be sure to check out his website!)

I’ve been following Ben’s work on Facebook for awhile. As a space buff, I’ve seen thousands of space related photos. Ben’s are among the best there are. Unique angles, wonderful lighting with amazing dynamic range. This book is a must have for any space buff. Ben explains what’s going on in each photo so if you’re not overly familiar everything, you will be.

Gave this book to my 10 year old grand-daughter, who wants to go to Mars, and she devoured it.

Ben is truly a master of his craft. He has spent his career perfecting the right angles, finding new perspectives and, perhaps most impressively, sharing his talents by teaching others and helping to inspire a new generation of space enthusiasts.

I ordered this directly from the author (one of the best follows on social media- get on it!) and had a copy autographed by him in one of his more recent offerings. Received the book today and have been pouring over it since. Not only is it a book of tremendous rocket photos (launch, landing, preparation, cockpit, etc) but also plenty of really neat information accompanying almost every photo.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that about half of the book is dedicated to the space shuttle. I'm super hot on the SpaceX stuff (Which this book contains) but nothing will equal the romanticism, scope, and complexity of the space shuttle. Not to mention bittersweet memories of the triumphs and losses. I was very happy to find so much Shuttle content.

Needless to say, if you or someone you care about is into space travel, you ought to buy at least 2 copies of the book. You will want one for yourself. I guarantee it.

These are just some amazing photos. They span from the latter half of the Shuttle program to the recent generation of new launch vehicles, notably the Falcon 9. I actually find the Shuttle part educational; the photos give the feel of the launch prep, the launch itself, and landing. There is one truly spectacular shot of the Shuttle flight deck that shows the complexity of the machine. I know I've seen some of these photos in the space press before, including the landing of a pair of Falcon Heavy side boosters, or some views of a single Falcon 9 first stage landing. (So now I know who took those pictures.) But to be sure, there are also launches of Delta II and IV-Heavy, Minotaur, and Atlas V. Having gone through once, I need to slow down now and really examine them again.

The photos are very interesting, the photographer captured some different perspectives that set them apart from all the other space launch photos out there. It’s too bad the book is a cheap paperback, because the best photos that the author wanted to highlight are printed across 2 full pages and the center of the photo then disappears into the spine of the book. A hardcover book that opened better would get 5 stars even if it was double the price.

The book is just a little smaller than I was expecting, but the important thing is that it is absolutely packed with spectacular photographs of spacecraft. I suspect I am not alone in finding the actual shots of take-off the most impressive, it is extremely difficult to do this well as the range of brightness is so great, from the searing light of the exhaust to the subtle indirect lighting on the rocket.

And this is the work of a master.
