For me personally, the blurb doesn’t do the book justice and truly tell you what to expect. I was expecting a romance with some comedy involved and just a little dash of drama. I got the romance, which I loved. I didn't have laugh out loud moments. There was however, DRAMA on top of drama. It was unexpected and over the top. The added surprise of a little suspense was a nice touch.
Laura Matthews and Mike Landry are in the midst of planning their dream wedding on a modest budget. Their wedding planner, Renae Fairmont came highly recommended. Her planning has put them over budget and they still have a lot to work out. After Mike receives a bill for an item they never asked for, he decides to confront Renae. Things get out of hand and Mike ends up firing her. However, “Renae Fairmont has never been fired by anyone…. I quit because I can’t work for someone who doesn’t appreciate my hard work and creativity.”
The couple turn to Jacqueline Whitmore and Shoe String Weddings to salvage their wedding. When Renae realizes Laura and Mike aren't going to come running back to her, she sets out to ruin their wedding. It takes everything Jacqueline has, with the help of her employees and friends to save the day and give Laura and Mike their dream wedding.
As I mentioned, there were definitely things about the book I liked/loved. Isabel is a good author with a good voice. The story was easy to follow, even if it did get my dandruff up a time or two or ten. The characters of Laura, Mike, Jacqueline, and the rest of their friends and employees were very likeable. The romance is kicked up a bit. The suspense was nice and surprising. I just didn't like the excessive amount of wedding planner drama. This might not have been such a huge issue for me if I knew going in it was there. With that said…..I now know what to expect and I’m looking forward to the next book.
**Received a copy from the author and reviewed the book voluntarily.**
I’ll give you an example: in this quote from the book there are 3 people involved in the conversation. The 3 of them are talking. Then all of a sudden comes this sentence: “Greeting everyone. Sorry, I’m late, but there was an accident near the Capitol, which slowed me down even more. You must be Laura and Mike. I’m Delilah Richards, your new florist. It’s a pleasure to finally meet you.” Now, this leaves me confused in the beginning. For me, that takes the whole flow out. You only understand who’s talking at the end of the paragraph. Now if the author had described it and maybe used some adjectives you wouldn’t be so confused. You wouldn’t be so distracted from the story. A simple solution would be to start with: Delilah walked in, obviously a bit flustered. Something like that. Now I’m not a writer so my suggestion might not sound good, but I think you know what I mean.
Furthermore, the POV changes a bit too much sometimes. On the same page it goes from Jacqueline’s to Mike’s. That just doesn’t work for me.
The main characters are capable and kind, but not developed enough for me.
There is some heavy kissing and one explicit adult scene in this book. Only, that scene came a bit apropos of nothing. I have nothing against a good adult scene, but is has to fit in the story. It’s gotta be in the right place. And this felt a bit like the author thought: “Hm, OK, I have to put in an adult scene, now where can I put it?”
But like I said, I did like the story. It’s fun and full of love. And there is a wicked ‘witch’ which makes for an interesting story.
I think if this author takes the constructive criticism on board, then it could be very promising.
One other thing: the wedding dress gets describes in detail and doesn’t even remotely resemble the dress on the cover. A little detail maybe, but all these little things make this book a 3 star and not 4.
I received this book for free from the author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review, as I am voluntarily reviewing it and my opinion is entirely my own.
