Laurie Anderson is one of the most revered artists working today, and she is as prolific as she is inventive. She is a musician, performance artist, composer, fiction writer, and filmmaker (her most recent foray, Heart of a Dog, was lauded as an “experimental marvel” by the Los Angeles Times). She has exhibited widely around the world, including at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin; the Musée d’art contemporain, Lyon, France; Fondazione Tramontano Arte, Naples; the Park Avenue Armory, New York; and MASS MoCa, North Adams, Massachusetts.

The shard of brilliance

All the things found yet without the painful shard. First and foremost, Laurie, unlike gaga and many others, is indeed a True Performance Artist, a time tested, real talent. The book, like most of her work is fragile with complexity, depth and the gift of anointing wisdom onto others. Being a performance artist myself, I sensed something missing in the beautifully published soft-cover / slipcase book. And that something is the raw shard of pain. She discusses how she lost her props and loving memories in the flood while calling that beautiful. A processed reaction? What's the raw, natural, riskier one? Was she furious, in tears, the humanity before the art ... I don't see that in this work. It's been digitized through the soul, tampered with tact.
High respect to Ms. Anderson for her brilliance and I do hope in the future we can collaborate on a duet or a project. Best pure wishes.

This is a beautiful book. Literally a work of art. Everything that Laurie Anderson does seems to have meaning and is meaningful, and ALL THE THINGS I LOST IN THE FLOOD, which is subtitled “Essays on Pictures, Language and Code,” means so much on many different levels.

It is a coffee-table book and would be irresistibly hard not to pick up and become engrossed in. Virtually every one of the 320 pages is illustrated with sketches, photos, and music scores, which represent Anderson’s life and works.

Footnotes, poems, and snippets of information intersperse chapters of philosophical, theoretical, autobiographical and multiple layered dream-like musings. These flit between fiction and non-fictional accounts, which characterise Anderson’s output.

The book is an account of the effects of a flood on Anderson, and her property and belongings but it is of course so much more. The flood becomes the catalyst for reflection and re-evaluation and inspires Anderson’s creativity. Metaphorically the flood is cleansing and allows Anderson to find fresh journeys to navigate and explore. The flood brings new life to her work.

All this is and more is documented in the book. As you read it you are drawn into Anderson’s reflections and thoughts, down well-trodden paths and some rather obscure twittens.

It’s a book to browse as well as study, savour and enjoy.
