A Meat Thermometer All Others Look Up To.
The Evolutionary Next Step of the Javelin Line
It’s time to expect more from your food thermometer. The Javelin PRO Duo is a professional food thermometer based on the popular Javelin model. This larger, top-of-the-line instrument has a 4.5" probe that opens to a total length of 10.75", thus keeping your hands away from the heat when cooking at the grill or in the oven. It is designed with an ultra-large 2" display with 360° viewing clarity that automatically rotates depending on how the device is held. It's also the first food thermometer that has an intelligent stabilization alert which notifies you and holds the readout when it has settled.

Packaging and Inside the Box:
The thermometer comes packaged in a mostly earth friendly cardboard box with a clear plastic window to allow you to see the face of the unit. It was nicely snug within the box which ensured it arrived safely from shipping without rattling loosely inside that may cause damage to the unit and make it inaccurate.
Inside the box is the Javelin Pro thermometer and a basic instruction manual. The manual gives basic information on the features, operation, safety, and troubleshooting of the unit. It is very small in size at 3 ¼ x 1 ¼ which caused me to lose sight of it a couple times which isn't the fault of the manual itself.
The size of the thermometer body is 6 ¼ in., the probe is 4 3/8 in. with the thin tip point being around 5/8 in. before tapering to the thicker section. The thick probe section is 1/8 in and the thin probe end is 1/16 in. The overall length of the thermometer is 10 7/8 in.
Reliability and Accuracy:
The boiling temperature in my area around the time of testing was around 210.4° - 211° F depending on what online calculator I used. I bought the water up to the boiling point and tested the thermometer
multiples times over a fifteen minute period. Every time I took a measurement the reading was repeatable and accurate within the range written above which is accurate enough in my opinion. When using this unit with other foods that need to be at a certain temperature to for food safety I always use more than one thermometer and they have always agreed with the Javelin Pro.
Using the thermometer is very simple to use in operation. Simply unfold the probe until it turns on and insert into the food you wish to measure. When unfolding the probe the unit will turn on or off when it is opened or closed at around roughly a 45° angle. It will fully open to a maximum of about 180°.
With this unit there are two modes or methods of measuring temperature. The first mode or method that I use when the food I'm measuring isn't to hot or releasing a bunch of steam is to simply insert the probe and wait until the reading stabilizes which is typically within 3-4 seconds. Measuring in this default mode allows the unit to continually measure the temperature of whatever it is in until the probe is removed.
The second mode or method is to insert the probe end into what is to be measured and continually press down on the touch sensitive starburst icon to the right of the display until a beep sound is heard which indicates the measurement has stabilized and completed. Keeping the starburst icon pressed down until the reading is read keeps the reading in a hold state so you can quickly remove the probe from the food and see the last known measurement without loosing it. This is good when grilling at a high temperature or when there may be a large amount of steam which makes it beneficial to get a quick measurement before receiving a potential burn.
The thermometer makes use of two touch sensors with the Javelin Pro icon on the left of the display being one and the starburst icon on the right side being another. The only use for the left icon is to turn off or on the power saving mode. The power saving mode is activated by hold down the left icon for two seconds upon which which a lighting bolt plus symbol will display on the screen indicating the mode is activated. When the power saving mode is activated the backlight is disabled as well as other battery draining features. What those other battery draining features are the manual fails to explain what they are with exception for the backlight. Holding the left Javelin Pro icon for two seconds will disable the power saving mode and remove the lighting bolt plus symbol on the display indicating it is disabled.
The right starburst icon controls more than one function unlike the left icon. Like I already wrote above continually pressing down on this icon activates the measurement stabilization and hold feature. The other function shows the min/max readings of the last measurement taken. It is activated by double tapping the starburst icon which will then show the last maximum temperature taken. Tapping the icon again will then cycle it to show the last minimum temperature taken. Holding down the icon during the min/max readings will clear the values from memory. The last function the starburst icon has is turning on the thermometer if the probe is unfolded and if it the unit goes to sleep after 60 minutes. It can also be woken up by closing and opening the probe end.
Other Features in Usage:
The screen is big and is easy to read at all angles except from the top when the backlight is off. When the backlight is on the display is a little more difficult to read from the top if not used in dim conditions. To fix this I turn off the backlight when it is not needed but turn it back on if using the thermometer at night. It isn't that bad but for the price I feel is should be viewable from all angles. In the end, I can use the hold function and view the display at the angle that shows the reading best.
Supposedly the display has a hydrophobic coating which allows for the display to still be readable even when using it over steaming liquids. In testing, the display collects condensation on the exterior despite the hydrophobic claims but remains readable despite the moisture.
A feature that is nice but is kind of lacking on this unit is the magnetic back. The magnet holds well on the smooth non-textured steel surfaces but holds poorly on glossy textured surfaces such as a refrigerator. My grill has smooth non-textured steel surfaces and the unit works well there but on my refrigerator where I like to store it I need to place another magnet under it to support it from sliding down to the floor. This is annoying and in my opinion unacceptable because a lot of people have refrigerators with glossy textured steel surfaces. At least it holds well to my grill where it really counts.
There is supposedly an anti-microbial coating integrated into the plastic to prevent pathogen buildup on the unit. I have no microscope to test this claim so I will just have to believe the manufacturer.
This thermometer feels sturdy in construction and doesn't creak, bend, or twist in normal usage. The stainless steel probe end itself is stout and the thin probe tip is nested between a rubber holder when not in use at the fully folded closed position. The only concern I have is if the plastic hinge and plastic molded around the probe will hold up over time with the repeated opening and closing action that it has to endure. The hinge closes very smoothly but it very stiff when unfolded open or folded closed. I push on the plastic molded area around the probe to reduce stress to hopefully prevent premature breakage in this area.
This unit is supposed to be splash resistant being IP65 rated and I believe the claims. I have accidentally spilled some liquid on it and with a simple cleanup it functions as well as when it was new. The area where the battery cover area attaches has an integrated o-ring and even though I won't take my unit apart to check I believe there is a gasket around the plastic housing to prevent liquid ingress if a spill happens.
I like the features and the fast repeatable accurate readings I'm able to get from this thermometer. The construction is good and I hope to get lots of reliable use from this Javelin Pro thermometer.

I tested this against my 3 year old Thermapen. It not only registered faster, but both read within a tenth of one another for readings, confirming it's accurate. I give bonuses to the backlit display and much lower price point. Add in that is read quicker or just as fast as the industry standard Thermapen, and this thing is a winner in my book. Only advantage to the Thermapen is that it came with a case, but considering the price point, I can live without that little add-on item.
Buy one of these and don't look back. Great deal!!!
