Editorial Reviews

Review

"Anyone involved with international humanitarian law -- academics, commanders and Soldiers, cadets, concerned citizens -- should be delighted that Professor Solis has devoted his expertise to writing [this] textbook...He combines academic rigor and expertise with experience as a combat Marine to communicate how these issues unfold on the ground...The broad coverage of essential international humanitarian law should make it a vade mecum for upper division undergraduate students as well as those in law school...Any tactical legal advisor should make sure this is the first item packed in his or her rucksack...With this outstanding textbook, Professor Solis makes a broad contribution to the study of an area of the law that is critical to the manner in which countries, armed forces, and individuals conduct themselves."
--Patrick Finnegan, Brigadier General, United States Army, Academic Dean, United States Military Academy

"The law of armed conflict matters. This superb book is an extraordinarily rich discussion of the law of armed conflict written by a combat veteran with a true understanding of the importance of such laws for effective democratic nation war fighting. It should quickly become a standard teaching manual."
--John Norton Moore, Director, Center for National Security Law & former Chairman of the Board, the United States Institute of Peace, Professor of Law, University of Virginia School of Law

"This is the book that teachers of the law of armed conflict have been waiting for. It tackles the controversial areas with a wealth of historical and legal reference material as well as comments on recent US practice. A real bonus is that it is interestingly and lucidly written - one always wants to read more."
--Major-General (ret.) A. P. V. Rogers, Fellow of the Lauterpacht Research Centre for International Law, University of Cambridge

"This is a most helpful guide to the law of armed conflict, designed for law students and undergraduates. Although structured as a textbook, it has a large dose of cases and materials. The book is written by an accomplished teacher with invaluable military experience."
--Yoram Dinstein, Professor Emeritus of International Law and Human Rights, Tel-Aviv University

This book is great for an introduction into the law of armed conflict (also known as "international humanitarian law.") It discusses, from an academic and barely-biased perspective, the wide range of issues that arise in starting and conducting war. It was published in 2010, and therefore is able to thoroughly discuss issues surrounding the American wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and the War on Terror. It also provides a good history of the development of the law of armed conflict up to present day. The book is well-researched and has great footnotes, making it a fantastic springboard to deeper research into the issue. I heartily recommend it.

If you wish to understand the weird world of international law that applies to conduct in armed conflict, buy this book. It gives great introduction to the evolution of "law' and "rules" ( note the difference here) that presumably govern armed conflict in the contemporary world. The author was a military officer and an instructor at the army academy at West Point who developed the "laws of war" program. If you wish a quick read, avoid this book. BUT, if you wish to understand the rules under which US troop operate in contemporary war zones, it is an essential read. It is well written for a book on law, and does explain principles in simple language.

For those of us involved in questions regarding the Law of War this book is an essential guide. It is at least a starting point and for many questions the end point also. I use if frequently. I am a lawyer who defends persons accused of violations of International Humanitarian Law; or, of war crimes. I highly recommend it.

I had the privilege of learning under Mr. Solis while studying abroad in The Hague, Netherlands. I loved everything about his class. This book was like getting to sit through it one more time. Professor Solis presents the Law of Armed Conflict clearly and effectively. His years of experience on the battlefield and in the classroom have made him an incredible communicator and educator. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about International Humanitarian Law.

The book is very honest with the reader, opening the knowledge transmitted and received by the author during his teaching at the U.S. military academy. Few lawyers have the courage to reveal the techniques of torture adopted by the CIA as does Gary Solis. Although not all the book had been used in my master's degree, it was very relevant to my studies. Other positive points are the examples after each chapter.
