Law and Disorder Hardcover – September 20, 2016

4.0 4.0 out of 5 stars 385 ratings

In the tradition of John Grisham, from radio talk show host and “America’s lawyer” Mike Papantonio, comes Law and Disorder, a highly suspenseful legal thriller in which a Florida attorney finds the system working against him.

Brash, brilliant, handsome Nicholas Deketomis has built a highly successful career as a lawyer protecting the rights of the innocent while winning multibillion dollar lawsuits from the powers that be. “Deke” may have come from the wrong side of the tracks but he’s built a wonderful life for his close-knit family. His wife, Terry, and two children live in a beautiful house in a seaside community along the Florida Panhandle.

But their comfortable life is endangered. In the midst of a highly contentious multimillion dollar lawsuit against a powerful pharmaceutical company, as well as publicly advocating for a liberal Florida State Senate candidate, this time Deke may have riled the wrong powerbrokers. Scheming against him are a local Bible-thumping preacher, an ambitious district attorney, and two malicious brothers running one of the country’s biggest oil corporations. A vile conspiracy is hatched to bring down Deketomis: Setting him up and attempting to convict him on a bogus murder charge would solve many of their problems.

Deke’s in the trial of his life, which quickly becomes a media circus. But this good man will not go down without a bruising fight—especially when he finds his family threatened. And just as it seems that his enemies may have him cornered, he finds help from the unlikeliest source.

Review

"The legal maneuvering, courtroom drama, and brisk pace make this a satisfying tale of greed, corruption, lust, and murder."
—Publishers Weekly

"You think you know the legal system? Mike Papantonio’s
Law and Disorder is an eye-opener. This is a legal thriller that edifies. Papantonio recasts the role of mass tort lawyers from villains and bottom-feeders, framing them instead as heroes and the last defense against corporate money and vested interests. In his legal career the author has walked the walk; now he successfully talks the talk in this compelling David vs. Goliath story."
—Alan Russell, bestselling author of
Burning Man

“The multidimensional brilliance of Mike Papantonio shines brightly through this can’t-put-it-down legal thriller. For a deep dive into law and politics, power and those who fight it, and the very human conflicts that drive and tear at us all, read
Law and Disorder!”
—Thom Hartmann, nationally syndicated talk show host and best-selling author

“
Law and Disorder is not only a legal thriller in true Grisham style—it is also an excellent window into the total dysfunction of the justice System. I literally couldn’t put it down.”
—Mark Geragos, renowned criminal defense attorney and author of
Mistrial: An Inside Look at How the Criminal Justice System Works…and Sometimes Doesn’t

"Mass torts attorney Nick “Deke” Deketomis, the hero of trial lawyer and radio host Papantonio’s impassioned first novel, is unafraid to take on the country’s biggest companies for corporate wrongdoing. At a pretrial hearing in a Florida courtroom, Deke wishes to enter as evidence a toxicology report in the case of his 19-year-old client, Annica Phillips, who suffered a stroke and partial paralysis after taking a birth control pill manufactured by Bekmeyer, a pharmaceutical giant. Shortly after the judge announces that he can’t accept the report’s conclusion, Annica collapses and dies, the victim of a large blood clot. In the course of seeking justice for Annica, Deke suddenly finds himself on the wrong side of the law and discovers that he has far more enemies than he imagined, some of whom will go to any lengths to protect their secrets. Papantonio’s characters can be overly preachy, especially when discussing politics, but the legal maneuvering, courtroom drama, and brisk pace make this a satisfying tale of greed, corruption, lust, and murder."

Publishers Weekly

“Probably the best compliment I can give this book is that I’m now hooked. I know (or I hope) that Deke is not done—that we have not heard the last from him. I’m waiting for the next one, to see what facet of the American legal system Deke will take on, and how he’ll do it. Time to move over, Grisham.”

—Mark M. O’Mara
O’Mara Law Group
American criminal defense lawyer and legal analyst for CNN

"A masterpiece…this gripping story of greed, guts, corruption and the underbelly of the criminal justice system in our country is not only a page-turner, it is also a must-read for anyone who cares about human rights and truth."

—Kerry Kennedy, human rights activist and writer

Papantonio Wins Again!

Papantonio Wins Again!
Mike Papantonio is an author who knows his subject like no one else does. In real life, Pap fights the forces of greed and evil - and he wins. His protagonist in the book is much like him, courageous, smart and one hell of a lawyer. Who knew that Pap could also write a thriller that is as good as any I've read, and I've read most every best-selling thriller that has come down the pike . Not only is this a can't-put-down thriller but the reader will gain some insight into the power of the petrochemical/pharmaceutical industry and the lengths they will go to to destroy anyone who stands in the way of their insatiable lust for profit.

After pre-ordering Mr. Papantonio's new novel, I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy with the only stipulation being to provide my unfiltered opinion. And after having just finished the last page, I am happy to say that I was instantly hooked! What a fantastic legal thriller! "LAW AND DISORDER" is a gripping, flowing story with completely unexpected twists and turns and a satisfying conclusion that makes me want to read more of 'Deke Deketomis' and his cohorts. Looking for a legal page turner with unique characters and some unexpected twists that the jaded reader won't see coming? Pick up this book.

A technical and yet clearly explained legal drama, Mr. Papantonio is effortless in his ability to succinctly but thoroughly describe both characters and complex legal maneuverings while still making the pages fly by! It is a glimpse of how a successful trial lawyer's mastery of law is intrinsically tied to his understanding of the opposing counsel's psychology and the vile dirty tricks that are sometimes unscrupulously played. Much like war, Mr. Papantonio weaves a fascinating peek behind the curtain of how the law (both in and out of the courtroom) is a complex mental battlefield of direct attack, sleight of hand with bold feints, reconnaissance, tactics and strategy.

What makes the interwoven threads work even more is the indisputable fact that Mr. P is himself a legend in the trial lawyer's pantheon (just Google the cases he's won...WOW). The man knows how to work a court room, period. His knowledge base is a wellspring of experience that he clearly drew upon to help ground the novel in reality. Mr. P's incredible trial record speaks for itself and lends immediate credibility to the legal drama he penned. I couldn't help shake the feeling that parts of what I was reading would better be described as an autobiography! Indeed, I wouldn't be surprised if some of the villains in the story are based on actual people Mr. P has taken on in defense of the defenseless.

At the same time, Mr. Papantonio has created a cast of characters that are instantly recognizable and yet refreshingly new. You want another novel about a broke underdog lawyer rising from the ashes and beating a powerful syndicate? Not this time! Plenty of other novels with that tired story line. (Grisham's Rainmaker, The Firm, A Time to Kill, etc etc to name a few). Don't get me wrong, Grisham is great (and if you like Grisham like I do, you should give this novel a go!) but I must admit to "underdog fatigue;" I'm tired of reading yet another "Rudy, Attorney-At-Law" or "Luke Skywalker, Esquire" everyman-come-from-behind main character.

Instead, how about mixing this trope up a bit?? Mr. P does this. How? By having the main character not be that cliche "young gun" but instead a master tactical jurist who -at the beginning of the novel- is already a force to be reckoned with by those corporations who do harm to the innocent. Now THAT is a fresh take on a main character.

In fact, I will say that the main character is nicely fleshed out beyond the traditional fictional lawyer's curriculum vitae. Deke comes from VERY humble beginnings, but he's got a Bentley. Deke's team is outnumbered and outspent by the $5,000/hour army of corporate lawyers he clashes with, but Deke's Florida Gulf Coast law firm has a Cessna Citation jet (flown by retired Naval Aviators, I love that attention to detail!). One thing that might be off-putting to some is that "Deke" is unabashedly a Progressive Liberal. And in the novel he takes shots at the Tea Party or Fox News...well...liberally (pun intended). However, that is part of Deke's rogue-ish charm and in the end actually helps flesh out Deke's character. Regardless of the reader's political affiliation, you UNDERSTAND Deke, you like him and his family, and stubbornly realize that you identify with him and share his vitriol against bad guys like the "Benzene Brothers."

I would ask that the conservative reader put aside knee-jerk judgments simply due to an opposing dogma and enjoy the story/characters! "Deke" is the liberal friend that staunch conservatives have who holds completely contrary views on social subjects, but is still their great drinking and poker buddy. He's down to earth, a family man, clearly cares about people and protecting those who can't protect themselves, and instantly likable. You will find yourself silently groaning at the occasional "tea bag" reference but then immediately be cheering Deke on as he swoops in for one of his courtroom coupe de grace moments.

Again, Mr. Papantonio has crafted a refreshing and entertaining tale with a cast of characters that makes you want to go that one more chapter-even though you were supposed to go to bed 3 hours ago. I simply couldn't put it down. I think I finished the entire novel in three sittings. And at 352 pages, it was a satisfying read! Bravo, Mr. P!

I am looking forward to taking part in Deke's next adventure!
Thanks for reading my review. I appreciate the opportunity to give my two cents.

Excellent novel for a look into the truly immoral and criminal behavior of big corporations. Not great writing like Don Winslow, or the late Elmore Leonard but an important book nonetheless. Especially for anyone who is suffering under the illusion that most corporations won't fight to get their way by any means necessary - and that, most of the time (98%?) , they have the law behind them.

I became interested in reading Mike Papantonio's Law and Disorder when I read about it in our local newspaper, the Pensacola News Journal. Since I am an avid reader, I was at first curious to read this book to support a local author. However, when I began reading, I could not put it down. The author's writing talent captured my ultimate interest. The main character, Deke, a highly successful lawyer who came from meager beginnings, was supportive of the "little guy" in a lawsuit against corporate America. Using his staff to assist in research and other tasks, Deke explored the negative role of a pharmaceutical company in his case. The characters are believable as the plot integrates political interests as well as a "holier than thou" local preacher. To further the conflict, the role of disorder in the law occurs as an ambitious district attorney gets involved in attempting to destroy the successful lawyer, Deke. Just when the reader thinks all is lost for Deke, help comes from unexpected sources.

Certainly, this legal thriller is outstanding and is a book that captures the reader! If you are a John Grisham reader, then you will be enthralled with Mike Papantonio's Law and Disorder!

The book was written well but had a couple problems. First, it felt like a promo for progressive causes. I'm all for progressive causes, but I don't need to be preached about them in my fiction reading. Second, what I thought was the main plot line got quickly resolved and another plot line developed--one which was a little far-fetched. Really? Am I supposed to believe that this accomplished strategic, well-spoken attorney would let himself get out of control like this? It felt contrived. I don't know how much of the plot was actually similar to events in the author's life, but I suspect a lot of the smaller side details were--at least it felt like that. And I didn't want to read an autobiography.

Informative on some areas I do not know. But somewhat onesided - all opponents are mostly bad, all proponents are mostly good, all victims are mostly helpless, and the roll of the 'hand of God' (my note, not a book quote) is seen at appropriate moments. BUT overall, very nice, indeed.

Is it a good book? Yes. Absolutely.

Is it a masterpiece. No, definitely not.

The reader gets more or less what they're promised. It's a solid legal and political thriller, with an interesting plot, which, while you can see where it's going has enough twists and turns in it and is written well enough to keep the reader engaged. Especially if you listen to the audio books. The characters, at least the main ones, Deke and his family, are reasonably well developed but lack a bit of depth. They can be a little two dimensional in places and their backstories, emotions and feelings aren't explored in much details. The novel is extremely plot driven.

That being said I certainly get the feeling Deke is an alter ego of the authors, himself a plaintiff torts lawyers involved in corporate malpractice and consumer protection litigation. Which is why he comes off as a sort of lawyer's version of a comic book superhero.

Where it falls down, is that it is highly political. The writer comes from a strong liberal perspective with an evidently intense, albeit understandable, dislike for a number of features of the American rightism, greedy corporations, the misinformation broadcast by Fox News, religious fundamentalism, discrimination ect. The stories villains are thus portrayed, not so much as caricatures but certainly parodies, of figures that represent these institutions. We have the fundamentalist pastor caught with underage girls, the careerist district attorney trying to destroy Deke, and the Swanson brothers who own a Texas Oil refinery that gave one couple cancer and bankroll GOP candidates - Three guesses who the authors getting at there.

The result is the reader is taken to a someone dystopian version of America where corporations rule and ordinary people get crushed. It's almost Dickensian in a way. And out of the midst of that we get the leading character Deke, the mass torts lawyer fighting for said ordinary people screwed over by the corporations. I think there's probably a ring of truth to a lot of this, and the author is himself a lawyer who has been involved in litigation against major corporations. I get the feeling that he's writing what he knows.

The problem is that this extremely negative portrayal of conservative figures, even if accurate, lacks the subtly required to take on these topics. Evident from the comments here on Amazon the readership is polarised and rightists have taken to complaining about how it is a "political soapbox" and full of "DNC talking points."

Just holding up the mirror to show conservatives for what they are doesn't make for a compelling story. You need to explore the characters and their lived experience. And Law and Disorder doesn't quite do that.

There is potential here. The story is a bit cliched and under developed and the writing is a bit on the amateurish side. The story is interesting enough to keep you reading to the end although the resolution is rather rushed and seems to come to easily. I get the impression Papantonio knows his top well but is just not a natural writer.
