Bear's history hurt to read. We find out a little bit about his mother, what life was like growing up as a biker and having the meanest SOB for a father. The hardest part was seeing through his eyes the torture he suffered at the hands of his enemy. No wonder he had nightmares and escaped reality with booze, drugs and babes. Each revelation gave me a bit more of an understanding of how he came to be the man he is. I wanted him to find peace, but by the end of Lawless, it's still out of reach.
I loved meeting Cynthia...not Cindy, only her mum calls her that. She prefers Thia, because that's what her daddy likes. She's a little spitfire ten year old who works part time at the service station. One day, things go a little pear shaped and there's a gun pointed in her face. Her hero is a beautiful biker named Bear. He fixes the problem and gives her a ring to keep (payment not to tell the cops) and tells her to come see him if she's ever in trouble. The little girl falls in love with the biker and remembers his offer.
Thia's life falls apart seven years later and she ends up needing Bear after all. Unfortunately, Bear is not in a good headspace and is definitely not ready to be anyone's Knight in Jeans and Biker Boots. The ring was supposed to be a joke, but someone forgot to tell the little girl. Bear decides to fix her problems quickly and get back to his self-destruction plans.
Things get out of hand and Bear and Thia's life is in danger. The more dangerous the situation, the more protective Bear becomes. There's a fairly big age difference between them which makes Bear hesitant to take things to a sexual relationship. Eventually they can't help themselves and you can see their feelings deepen.
T. M. Frazier has a remarkable talent for taking me out of my comfort zone (willingly) and making me enjoy (maybe not the right word) subjects I would normally avoid. This series is awesome and I can't wait for the next installment.
Overall Opinion: This was a good start to the duet. I am jumping right into Soulless, and I am so grateful that I waited until all the books were out before starting them! I appreciated their connection, but I think I'm missing something because I didn't feel the deep connection that others spoke of in their reviews. Don't hate me! -- I'm into it and I really want them to get a HEA, but I actually kind of liked Bear more in King's books. On to the next to see what will happen...

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Thia and Bear's story. They meet when Bear stops a fellow mc member from robbing the convenience store that Thia is manning. He then gives her a ring with a promise that he owes her any favor. Thia holds on to this ring for 7 years. When she finds herself in a horrible situation, she goes to look for Bear at the mc. She soon realizes what a mistake she made when she gets there and finds out that he is no longer part of the mc. Bear gets a call about a beaten girl that was dropped off by the mc, and comes out of his self induced seclusion. There is a good bit of violence, some hot sexy times, some sweet moments, and some mc and personal drama.
POV: This alternated between Thia and Bear's POV.
Overall Pace of Story: Good. I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.
Instalove: No. They take a while for stronger feelings to develop (but I do think it is over a short period of time).
H rating: 3.5 stars. Bear. I liked him a good bit until the pushing away part. Really?!? We HAD to go there? It was like King all over again! Which I'm confused about, because Bear was actually pissed at King for behaving that way!
h rating: 4 stars. Thia. I liked her. She was sassy, tough, and pretty brave. I appreciated how she called Bear out, and didn't let him get away with bossing her around (for the most part anyways).
Sadness level: Low/moderate. There are some heavy themes, but I never needed any tissues.
Heat level: Moderate. There are some hot scenes and chemistry, but not so many that it took away from the story.
Descriptive sex: Yes.
Safe sex: No. No use of condoms, no birth control talk, and no std status talk. There is mention that the H had never before gone without, and that he would like to get the h pregnant.
OW/OM drama: Not really
Sex scene with OW or OM: Yes
Closure: This ends on a cliffy, so no closure yet. The next book is out already, so I'm able to get right to it.
How I got it: I paid the $3.99 on Amazon.
Thia first met Bear when she was 10 years old. He left an impact on her so a few years later when she found herself in trouble she ran to Beach Bastards MC looking for him. But what she found was not at all what she was looking for. Luckily, a bad situation did not turn even worse and she was able to get to King. When she is reunited with Bear, it's not the reunion that she was expecting or one that Bear had planned for. However, a promise is a promise so Bear agrees to help Thia but her situation quickly becomes more complicated than first thought. Add in the fact that now the MC knows about her and her connection to Bear, and she is a wanted woman.
I know that Bear was dealing with a lot of his own personal demons but he was a bastard to Thia in the beginning. And when he finally started to wake up, he still made a few stupid mistakes, but he did finally get his head out of his ass. Thia may have seemed like a naive girl in the beginning but she is far from stupid and is very strong-willed.
Like with all of the other books in this series, you will be on the edge of your seat waiting to read what is going to happen next. I didn’t see the ending coming and the cliffhanger was just WOW.
