Peter Greene (Pulp Fiction, The Mask) and Adam Trese (The Underneath) star as Jimmy and Jon, two petty crooks who find the opportunity for a big score when Frankie, an old friend and ex-con, arrives in town with a load of illegal handguns for sale. The guns are the source of tension for the friends and their families. When a domestic dispute lands Jon in jail, Jimmy goes to sell the guns to raise the bail. But when Frankie discovers that his merchandise is missing, he goes after Jimmy and the guns. Gritty look at working class whites caught in a life of petty crime

This movie is about two petty neighborhood crooks Peter Greene and Adam Trese. They steal a radio out of a car and try to sell it to a fence. They walk into a department store and heist as much as they can handle. It deals with their relationship and their relationship to others. It’s a really gritty look at working class whites, a group that is rarely covered in the movies anymore. I found their hijinks to be both funny and poignant at the same time. I wanted to see what happened to them.

Years before "Blair Witch Project" and the "Paranormal Activity" movies, we get this picture. Nick Gomez, too, had worked for Hal Hartley a la Tom DiCillo helping out with Jim Jarmusch on "Stranger Than Paradise" -- similar to Kim Deal and Tanya Donelly gestating the Breeders out of the Pixies and Throwing Muses (they used to do sing-a-longs together, in the same touring van), a sign of the times. Here, you get people talking the way people you know talk -- the action seems to take place in 2 or 3 neighborhoods -- and if the action's still hip-hop oriented and a skip past people around your neighborhood, it's still a far cry from the gangsters in "Goodfellas," in that a fistfight's all you really expect to happen. Since everyone's living in a "non-boring" lifestyle -- you certainly won't be bored, if you compare it to your daily life; if you compare it to a cop show and the usual primes and triggers, you might very well be -- and such a state is inherently subjective, at some point, someone's opinions about someone's opinions are gonna reach a certain point, because no-one's touching the wall. Outside of day jobs, school and career -- what do you expect? It might make you nervous, and the un-PC behavior might put some viewers off, a sure sign you're not used to immersing yourself somewhere you'd never really be. Face it, you don't really believe in Hannibal Lector or most gangster films; you can tell by how secure you feel that it's a fictional narrative. Here, you might be looking at the clock nervously and drumming your fingertips on the tabletop. Paradoxically -- or rather, in a way that seems to *reinforce* the heaviness -- the banter is very lively, the kidding around seems to be at a constant, and the "school's out" feeling is so pervasive you can see why people choose to/fall into this life. In the line of "Do the Right Thing" and certain Beastie Boys albums, but you'd have to know what you're looking for: parking for a crime drama will only lead you to dismay. Thinking of Cassavetes would at least help. Enjoy!

It's too bad Peter Greene didn't become a bigger star because he is always excellent in everything he's in. Also a great appearance by a young Edie Falco, and Paul Schulze who is probably best known for playing Father Phil in The Sopranos. Adam Treese was also good and I thought he'd be more busy as an actor in later years, but it never happened for him. Laws of gravity is raw and gritty, and reminds me of what big city life in a neighborhood full of knuckleheads was really like during that time in history.

"Laws of Gravity" is what I call 'character cinema' in action. This is a film in which the characters are so fully formed that you'll forget they're actually characters. It's films such as this that make you disgusted with Hollywood products. NO big studio-style contrivance. NO trying too hard to be real. These characters just EXIST and you believe in them.

This film was made for $38,000 which the writer-director raised himself. It's one of the best independent films of the 90s or any other decade.

Peter Greene has always had such a magnetic presence on screen. This is one of the films that he'll be remembered for (check out the unforgettable 'Clean, Shaven' as well). His co-stars are superb too - Adam Trese, Edie Falco...they're all great.

It's a NAKED, PURE, HONEST portrayal of shabby lives. Even if you don't find the characters or the milieu appealing, you'll be beguiled by the film.
