Insanity and joking aside...
From the start, it actually felt a bit wonky at first but as with any new tool it took time adjusting to. By the second or third time, I picked it up and almost immediately held it without the need to turn and fondle the machine until it felt comfortable. The build quality is pretty nice, though I'm a bit disappointed the only way to turn the pen on or off is by plugging or unplugging it. No chance of a button or switch? It peeved me with glue guns (a common comparison to these types of pens) and I'd imagine it would have been a no-brainer. It's not a complete deal breaker though; just a feature I think would be quite useful. Oh, and MAN - that LED is bright as HECK! :C Dim the LED a bit - notification isn't bad but blinding light isn't useful at all. I'm gonna take a marker or some kind of film to it soon so it's not in my eye.
It takes 1.7mm ABS filament. Nowhere does it imply accepting the other popular PLA material and I don't have money to test (and possibly destroy) the pen to find out so unless someone else is daring to experiment I'll go with what the instructions say on this one. It comes with a nice amount to start with but once you get the hang of it (or if you test it for extended amounts of time) you'll run out quick. The store I work at sells plenty of the stuff cheap and it works good so far.
Another issue I've got compared to others is the placement of the power jack. Considering it's not an L-shaped plug, I felt it would make more sense to have placed the jack on the very back of the pen, instead of perpendicular to the unit. It's annoying depending on where your outlet is, and it can sometimes get in the way. Filament entry isn't so bad though I saw a concept for some other pens where power and filament went into the top of the pen and I feel that would be the better option in the long run. The button to press to insert filament is a bit of a tough one to push but it's nice and secure in the end.
It didn't take long to start getting the hang of it, and it works great out of the box. Quick warm up time, and really, it works good. Keep in mind how ABS works and you're good to go - a few notes - ABS tends to bend some when drying. It's not really meant to stick to things (you can draw on paper and peel it off easy - almost too easy at times). It's not food safe - at least the type of ABS used in printers - if anything, cover it in a resin before use - or better yet, use it as a positive to create molds for whatever you might want to create! By day 2-3 of use, I can pick it up without fumbling to hold it comfortably, and it's almost natural how I get it ready for use. I love it.
I can't say much else about it - it works fine, right out of the box, and I haven't had to contact customer support. I've been wanting one of these things for a long time, and it feels nice to use, and it works great. I highly recommend you buy this; while the 3Doodler was my first choice, I have to side with this pen for now as it's the first one I've personally owned and it works better than I thought.
Now for the pen itself, read the instructions first or you'll be dumbfounded along the way. The 3 filament colors they give out are A LOT longer than I anticipated (I even bought refills from a different company because I thought the refills will be very short like the filament sticks). The filaments that comes with the pen will last for awhile. It heats up fast, and it works amazing. I have a lot of fun with it. You have to be patient when you use the pen if you want steady lines. Also practice makes it great.
Anyway, I'd recommend this pen for anyone who wants to get a 3d pen!
On the photo I attached that's ONE of the three filaments Lay3r included in the box, along with the adaptor plugged into the pen.
It's been days since I first contacted the company - the phone line doesn't yield a live person and they do not respond to any email requests. I will be disputing this with my credit card company because Amazon is allowing this product to be sold with a full on year manufacturer warranty.
