Jack's Vital Stats: Age: 34, Height: 6'2", Weight: 185 Hair: Jet Black, Eyes: Steel Blue, Build: Broad Chest & Shoulders, Slim Waist, Born: New York, NY, Home: San Juan Capistrano, CA, Work: Mergers & Acquisitions, Employer: Self (formerly Benson Kohler) Cars: Aston Martin V12 Zagato, Range Rover, Hobbies: Martial Arts, Hiking/Climbing, Spectator Sports, Surfing, World Travel, Music, Food & Wine. He goes on to summarize this impeccable creation: `When we first meet Jack in `Lazar's Intrigue' (Book 1), we encounter a gentleman whose battles are usually fought in the boardroom, not on the street for his life. But an evening on the beach at the brink of a raging storm changes all that. Maybe it's a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or perhaps the twisted machinations of fate, but Jack's life hurdles onto a different course that night as he witnesses the shooting of a beautiful woman and rushes to save her life, thrusting himself into the middle of a corrupt DEA investigation. But why get involved at all? Two reasons, really. And the first is easy to understand. Jack discovers that he is mysteriously tied to the DEA's case, and being a take charge guy, he's determined to get to the bottom of things, especially after the DEA refuses to answer his questions. The second motivation takes us to the core of Jack's greatest weakness, beautiful women.....So, Jack is seduced into a dangerous world he has never known before, and it starts a domino effect of similar experiences in the books that follow. It seems like a strange energy has taken him over, attracting dangerous people and life threatening incidents again and again. Through these adventures, we also watch Jack develop into a bold, courageous hero who won't hesitate to stand up to the bad guys, especially when it entails saving someone he cares for. To him, it's all about honor and doing the right thing, no matter what.'
Condensing Sterling's plots is a challenge - everything happens in an orderly, well-paced fashion and if you are used to Jack Lazar you know you are in for intense intrigue, lots of explicit sex, and a rousting finale. In this, the initial Jack Lazar tale, Jack glimpses a sensuous woman as she screams after being shot by two men following and falls into the water - the shooters assume she is dead. But in comes Jack, discovers a weak pulse and transports her to a hospital. The `victim' we learn is DEA agent Sarina Anapoulos and is as sexy as she is bright. As Sarina gradually recovers she seeks out Jack (naturally many vivid sexual encounters accompany their trysts) and the two join in the suspenseful chase that leads them thorugh a corrupt DEA plot and to those who would prefer both Jack and Sarina dead.
Action, suspense, erotic sex, and twists and turns in intriguing subplots flesh out this book that is the beginning of a very successful series. Recommend? Read them all! Grady Harp, June 14
Perhaps the issue I had with these scenes stems from my dislike of Sarina's character. She had so much potential in the beginning - a strong female working undercover for the DEA. Then she almost physically attacks Jack, wanting sex and nothing else. This continues throughout the book with a few episodes of public sex at her request. Perhaps the worst was when she was assaulted (sexual assault being the intent of the perp), yet she immediately wants to have sex with Jack, and displays absolutely zero signs of trauma at any point. I didn't buy her character at all. She was simply a tool used so the author could write the sex scenes.
As I said, the book began really strong and there were sporadic scenes where the action was really engaging, sadly they were broken up too much by the meaningless sex.
In Lazar's Intrigue, the first book in the Jack Lazar series, the ruggedly handsome Jack Lazar has just been blackmailed into quitting his job and finds himself with a lot of time on his hands. After encountering a stunning damsel in distress on the beach, Jack finds himself tossed into a new world where his life is constantly in danger and he has to figure out how to survive. This book is action packed, fast paced, and impossible to put down. If you are a bit modest be warned, there are a few kind of racy sex scenes in this book.
All in all, I thought that Lazar's Intrigue was a great introduction to a character that I had already grown to love. Well done Sterling.
Lazar's Intrigue, like the other Jack Lazar books is well written and incredibly engaging. It features the incredibly attractive ladies man, Jack Lazar shortly after he has been blackmailed into leaving his job. Having read some of the books later in the series I was able to appreciate where Jack came from and the growth that he is going to make. Like the other books in the series Lazar's Intrigue is fast paced, action packed, and includes a few graphic sex scenes. Sterling does a great job of keeping the reader on their toes throughout the story. I’ve said it after each Lazar book I have read and I will say it again, I can’t wait to read more about Jack Lazar.
